    @dank If one could run GrapheneOS on a FairPhone, I'd have definitely considered one. But I can't, so I didn't 😞

    @neil they do offer pre-loaded /e/OS, but i don't know enough about alt OSes to know the difference. iirc graphene does a lot more at the system level for safety and privacy, but as most authenticators and corpo crap doesn't support it i never took it for a test drive

      @neil

      Of course, you could simply think about that BEFORE buying another black slab.

      If you bought a Fairphone, for instance, you would have guaranteed updates for at least 5 years. From experience, much longer.

      You also would be free from those megalomaniac tech corporations like Samsung, Apple, Google etc. And you could install a google-FREE Android like e/OS/ which supports the Fairphones out of the box and runs great on them.

      And what's more, Fairphones are sustainable by design, from the sources of raw materials to the easy replacement of parts and batteries.

      Instead of complaining, you could just act and not give your money to corporations who rip you off, steal your data, and live on planned obsolescence...

      @HarryMutt

      What a strange post. Are you feeling okay?

      I'm upgrading from a device running GrapheneOS, which has come to the end of its five years of security updates.

      I am upgrading to another device running GrapheneOS, which should offer seven years of updates.

      I don't need new features, but I do want the security updates.

        No - not me.

        I think that was someone else's comment.

        Mea culpa on that. However, I do not consider a slab with Graphene installed to be "new" anymore.

          2001: I have a new phone. How exciting! Perhaps I can access the Internet on it via a Sharp Zaurus. This is so the future!

          2002: Ooh! A new PalmOS device! Amazing! HotSync backup and off we go!

          2004: Wow! This WindowsMobile device has a keyboard, as is basically a mini laptop. Cool!

          ...

          2026: I must get a new black slab because security updates have run out on my current black slab which, for all other intents and purposes, is absolutely fine. The new black slab does nothing new for me, and all I see is the chore of setting it up.

            @dank I have had problems with banks not liking it (which is daft, given its security focus), but everything else has been fine.

            YMMV, of course!

                @jtonline @neil same. I’m holding onto my iPhone 13 mini for as long as possible, or until another similarly sized (or smaller) option is available.

                @zed @neil when is someone finally going to make a new sensibly sized phone though? It's a sizeable market of... checks notes... two of us!

                          This will be my third GrapheneOS device.

                          A genuinely excellent Android experience, with many years of support and security updates.

                            @neil I have only the second smartphone in my life, and it's quite "old" now. I'll keep it until it breaks. Environment is an important point for me. For security, I use my fix line. 😁 I know. 😎

                                A new device would be in the state the manufacturer most intends it to be in. Even if you install GOS minutes into its ownership, boom, not new.

You still finance big corps because Graphene's VERY limited choice of supported hardware. You still can't easily replace parts. And you still have a phone built with blood minerals.

                                      A new device would be in the state the manufacturer most intends it to be in. Even if you install GOS minutes into its ownership, boom, not new.

                                      Ah, that's an unusual interpretation of "new" to me. I bought a new, unopened, device. I will install my software of choice on it, and use it.

                                      To me, that's new phone!

                                        My last phone was a OnePlus 5T. It was released 9 years ago. It had 8 cores, including 4 high-performance 2.45GHz ones, 8 GiB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage. It is massively overpowered for everything I use it for. Apparently the last LineageOS version to run on it was Android 15. I think that still gets security updates but is no longer the latest release.

                                        I’d still be using it if I hadn’t accidentally put it through the washer-dryer. I replaced it with a 9 Pro, which is now over 5 years old and runs the latest Android via LineageOS.

                                        The 5T stopped getting official updates with the stock firmware around 2020. The 9P Pro’s last official update was in 2023.

                                        The fact that a group of volunteers can maintain updates for years after the vendor stops makes it very obvious that this is an intentional choice by the vendor. I hope that the labelling requirements in the CRA will start to disincentivise this behaviour.

                                        @david_chisnall The Right Of Repair laws in the EU already changed a lot, I hope that their will come more positive effects also on that problem.

                                          @jtonline @neil the iPhone mini is still pretty popular in France. I see them all the time.

                                          @zed @neil the closest I've found recently was the AEROS Centi but it's not real, and probably never will be. (I was desperate enough to sign up for emails but so far, nothing, not even one email.)
