Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.
@Garwboy Somebody told me that "creating code is a solved problem" now - that is like saying "logistics is a solved problem" - someone has just to drive the trucks around.
-
@Garwboy not defending ai in any way, but i think that's two different concepts altogether.
@EvelynOctavia @Garwboy This is generally in reference to school essays where doing the work of transforming knowledge and research into a well formatted argument is the entire point. Taking that raw information and letting an LLM spit out an essay entirely circumvents the learning process. The teacher doesn't care about the essays, they aren't worth anything, they're going to be bad.

I was thinking more of a gym where the exercise machines would all have little electric motors on them to do the exercises very quickly and without any effort.
And in taking the lunch by parenteral without ever ceasing to work.
Everything is pure efficiency. -

@Garwboy The question is always what the task is and what the outcome is.
Usually the task isn't "Write an essay" but "Understand topic X and to show me that you do understand it, write down your thoughts on it"...
AI can perfectly write down *some* thoughts on it and provide a good outcome in 15 minutes (or even less).
But you still didn't solve the task as you still don't understand X.
The analogy with using a forklift to lift weights captures that nicely!

@Garwboy but I don't like writing essays, but I do like receiving 10 and pass exams.

@Garwboy Whoever lets Ai write an essay is too dumb to grasp the meaning of the word essay.

Hey, you know what *did* take ages to write, and used 0% AI? My various books

They've been nicked and used to train various AI engines, and cost me a lot of earnings in the process, so if you like your info 'direct from source', please consider purchasing one.

@Garwboy I don't agree with this analogy, because it's equating speeding up a task with skipping it entirely.
With AI, you're not skipping a task. You're finishing it up faster, but depending on how you use it, you're not improving or gaining anything of substance, so in the end you might learn basically nothing and you end up with code or stuff that barely works, or that breaks in some way the LLM hasn't foreseen, or has only added a stub function with a // todo and a console print that mentions said function was ran successfully, giving the impression that the agent did in fact fully code everything.
Vibe coders or people with no knowledge of a subject, that just get to their desk, open ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and ask them to do a task entirely without having clear goals, steps, research in mind:
if you immediately go for a shower at the gym you haven't worked out. A better analogy would be that you go to the gym and lift weights very quickly, which doesn't really help you build muscle because there's less tension and resistance. You're just flailing around your arms with weights, etc.
If you want to finish your lunch faster you'd soak the sandwich in coffee, tea, water, and then scarf it down.
Is this a fast way to work out and to eat? Sure, but you won't really gain muscle, nor will you feel satiated from a soaked up sandwich.
Experienced developers that already know the ins and outs of stuff that just want to speed up some of the more menial tasks (e.g. populating a lot of JSON by hand) or use LLMs as a copilot, a second set of 'eyes', etc:
If you already have research material, or you know what you need to do but you'd like to do it ever so slightly faster, there are ways to achieve that.
You could research what machines and workouts help you gain muscle more efficiently. A barbell squat rack would be better than a Smith machine because a squat rack allows for free movement, which engages more stabilizer muscles vs a Smith machine which has a fixed bar path.
Eat a sandwich faster? Cut the crust, take a bite and then a small sip of a drink, use a panini press (a sandwich maker) to make it thinner, use thinner and softer bread, chop and spread the filling more evenly instead of creating bulky layers of meat, cheese, lettuce, etc.

Yep. That’s a thing many people are not willing to understand:
"Help me" is not the same as "Do it for me".

@Garwboy But your shower and sandwich, combined at the level of power they can, pales in comparison to the aggregate power of tech bros databases combined. And your small effects, intimately integrated into root vital infrastructure, worldwide, can't destabilize enough people toward ultimate Capitalism profits, tech bros or otherwise.
It's 'nerd grift', at such a scale that it could put us all back in caves, while they enjoy luxury bunkers.
Remove them from power, along with the fossil fuels oligarchy. Crony politicians are next.

@Garwboy [hungry goblin that lives in your trash can] thank you for optimizing
-
@Garwboy If you throw them straight into the bin, the sandwich chef can also use inedible ingredients, saving even more time and money. If you throw it next to the bin instead of into it, the bin doesn't need emptying, saving even more!

@Garwboy lol, thanks for the laugh - like if I start a book and only read the last page, cam be done with it in one minute, super productive. Good stuff, too much focus on destination and not enough on the journey

@Garwboy LLMs really are just the ultimate by-product of capitalism? The perfect distillation of an ideology that values product over process and commodity over community.
From the perspective of profit this technology is god-send. In terms of actually enhancing human lives I have only seen applications in specific scientific fields.
-
@cadadr @Garwboy That was British sarcasm. It was me saying that the products of the AI age will depend on it for everything and will not learn properly. We already know that access to data and the ability to interpret data are two different things. AI takes another skill from people: the processing.
