    A timely reminder the gendered impact of the skewed character of medical research & its funding:

    'Ending medical misogyny means closing the gender health gap, not only because it’s fair, but because it’s essential. A system that listens to women, funds their health & values their wellbeing is one that benefits society as a whole. It’s time we stop calling women’s health a “niche issue”.'

    Its extraordinary that in 2025 we still need to be saying this!

    Despite the common narrative that AI is robbing graduates of entry level jobs, the evidence remains scanty or non-existent;

    rather, what is clear is that while graduate unemployment is rising in the UK & US, it is doing so at a slower rate than that for those without tertiary education of some sort;

    Rather than a crisis in graduate employment what we are actually seeing is a general decline in employment, which requires a wider economic explanation

    With the International Monetary Fund & the Bank of England both warning yesterday that the AI driven stock market boom may actually be a unsustainable bubble (although valuations are yet to hit the peak multiple of earnings seen n the Dotcom boom), it will be of no surprise to you that there are also many arguing that 'this time its different'.

    And of course, a lead indicator of a crash is when one hears this very claim.

    The AI crash is coming the only real Q. is when?

    Inequalities in land ownership in Scotland are among the most pronounced in Europe with half of all Scottish land held by 1% of the population;

    the Scottish Green's are seeking to introduce an amendment to the Land Reform Bill that would limit further consolidation through purchase by banning land being bought by those who already own 500 hectares of Scotland already.

    Many would like to see (but don't expect) a similar move South of the Border

    Like other countries across Europe Spain is seeing a resurgence of the far right, and once again, while the politicians target immigrants, those who are drawn towards them are more concerned with issues like housing & work (or lack of it) that the right then uses as a prompt to scapegoat migrants.

    Its all depressingly familiar & once again demonstrates the failure of a contemporary politics skewed towards the interests of the wealthy.

  • So, the Police *did* find the resources to arrest 335 peaceful protestors in London, despite the other (one might suggest) more important uses of their officers.

    So, the Police *did* find the resources to arrest 335 peaceful protestors in London, despite the other (one might suggest) more important uses of their officers.

    Still, there owe go; once you've decided to arrest peaceful protestors if you choose not to due to being stretched to thin, the not in that such arrests a political expedient rather to 'restore order' would become waaaay to obvious!

    There is another way:

    unlike the UK which, while seeing migration rise but has spent considerable political time making migrants lives both uncomfortable & demonising asylum seekers as part of a 'hostile environment'... Spain has adopted a considerably more liberal migration regime & has a cheap renewable energy strategy.

    Now Spain is one of the most economically successful European economies (current GDP growth 3% annually) while the UK is not... draw your own conclusions.

    Its not all that's going on round the visit but its a valuable lesson in where sucking up to a bully gets you.... nowhere!

    Starmer & his advisors need to rethink their transatlantic policy

    The ultra-wealthy would have a better case against a wealth tax if they were paying similar levels of tax to other people... however, while squealing about over-taxation of various forms, around the world the rich consistently pay less tax than regular folk.

    Their disassociation from society, formed by a belief that their money is a just reward for their brilliance is just a different form of sociopathy (cloaked by the media & politicians).

    Brexiters now complaining about the 'small boats' immigration 'problem' have (wilfully?) forgotten that when we were in the EU this wasn't a problem because the Dublin Convention meant we had automatic returns agreements with all EU members for failed asylum seekers; which acted as the very 'deterrent' the Right are now demanding.

    Brexiters are clamouring to solve a 'problem' that their actions actually created...

    That said we should be acting better towards asylum seekers anyway!

    Ha ha, economist discovers that economists' political views impact on their economic analysis....

    as a fully functioning political economist this really is of no surprise whatever.... indeed I based some of my Economics for Non-Economists core PPE module on this precise insight... economists are unable (whatever they claim) to be non-political - in fact the very claim itself is political....

    But hey, always good to see someone pointing this out (again).

    As the crisis in school funding continues, we can be conclude that future generations are being betrayed by a consistent under-funding of state schools, leading (of course) to an ever more privileged status for the UK private educated... with more resources, more staff time & better infrastructure all enjoyed by those whose parent can afford it....

    If you want to see class warfare this is as good example as any....
