  • Almost all the servers on Mastodon and the wider Fediverse are run by unpaid grassroots volunteers that pay their server's bills out of their own pockets.

@FediTips what you're describing is the average fedi enjoyer use case. Small communities that have at least one techy person able to do this on volunteer basis (but normally being a tech affine community in the first place). I think there is a limited amount of people in the world for which this use case works out. I would even say, it's not the norm.

You can (and should) have multiple smaller commercially driven instances competing with each other for te rest. But they need to start somewhere.

@FediTips @tauon I think you just provided the evidence.

Mastodon.social is run by a non profit organization while they have the burden to be host for "normal people". Mastodon is far from being popular enough for making a real social change in the world, but we already have instances struggling to handle the people.

So if people will not change their behavior, and the Fediverse will not change it's acceptance of commerciality, I don't see how this should work out with even bigger numbers.

@tauon @FediTips and there will be instances as long as at least one person is willing to host them.

But will there be enough people willing (and able) to host and administrate enough instances for the entire world all just for cost coverage at best? I don't think so.

Fediverse will not die without more possibilities to secure a revenue. But without it, I highly doubt it will get big enough for the change in society it could provide.

@FediTips I sure hope you're right and the social problems don't start to accelerate faster than we could catch up, because I really want to be wrong about this.

@FediTips Maybe. But what if not? What if we have reached the limits without structural changes?

The Fediverse exist, it's a nice place. It doesn't need to grow to ensure it's existence. That's not my point.

I think society has a problem rooted in the marketing platforms some call "social media" and I think Fediverse is the best solution to this problem. But transferring the reasons why so many still use this platforms to Fedi, would perhaps need more possibilities to make money.

@FediTips Right, organic grow has been a strong factor in why fedi is so pleasant. However, for now I mostly see sub cultures with a stronger affiliation to tech stuff.

And I feel like by now the growth has come to an end. I don't say the majority must use primary Fedi, I'm happy if it stays like it is, but I think the world would be better if everyone would do.

I hope I'm wrong, but I really don't think the mainstream will ever come to Fedi, without someone pulling them here. Maybe that's ok.

@gbargoud @FediTips yes that's for organizations. It would be nice if this could Cross-Finance the Fediverse for private users, but I don't think that will fit. For a number of reasons.

I wonder how a sustainable implementation could look for a "general user instance". Something that would ensure professional it-security, backup and content Administration. Maybe that's only possible if "mainstream" accept that you have to pay for it. But again, I don't see that happening any time soon.

@FediTips I'm just curious. Is this really sustainable on a long scale. Especially if we want "mainstream" to use Fediverse.

I personally hope that people can professionalize in the Fediverse and make a living out of it.

With the federated structure we finally have a way to counter the greed of single closed platforms. If someone starts enshitification, you can leave to a "competitor" at any time or do it yourself if you have the time and passion to.
