There is one interpretation that one could have: Since in the US people usually only speak English (and the British were quite proficient in their colonial phase), international events are mostly held in English. If the US wouldn't attend in Davos, the event might be done in the local language, which is German (de-CH).

But I guess even then, English is today's lingua franca. 1/
