    The gene name error issue is merely a symptom of a bigger problem where researchers are lacking the training to conduct this type of data science. This is why we started the reproducibility network for computational biology. It is meant to be a society for data scientists in the life sciences that advocates and educates to raise research quality

    I still monitor these spreadsheet errors and publish monthly reports on my group's webpage. You can see that rates of affected articles are still 15-25%.

    One measure that has worked and which I didn't predict at the time was the changing of human gene symbols to prevent autocorrect. Eg: SEPT9 was changed to SEPTIN9 and MARCH1 changes to MARCHF1.

    I supposed that after a bit of media attention, this problem would be resolved pretty quickly, but because it involved problems in software, researcher training, peer review quality and publisher QC, progress on eliminating this problem has been very slow
