  • Hey y'all - how do I get in touch with language/type system nerds who want to build something cool?
    nielsa@mas.toN nielsa@mas.to

TL;DR: Send me your programming language nerds, especially if they know type theory and how to execute in code.

    Applications of the tech:

    - Type checking helm charts before applying them - improving the development feedback loop, potentialy providing a language server experience for writing values files, eliminating whole classes of errors in YAML engineering

    - Better typing in e.g. the operator-framework helm-operator approach to operators, less manual work in generating well-formed resource definitions etc.

Without something like this, I need a way to move off helm. This extends helm's lifespan.

    Concretely:

    - CUE lang (https://cuelang.org/docs/) can read OpenAPI specs
    - Kubernetes resources come with OpenAPI specs
    - Helm charts use *untyped* values files to *generate* Kubernetes resources - which may fail at apply time (after templating) if templating is incorrect
    - We *should* be able to infer types for values files based on how they are used in templates, where we have known resource definitions (OpenAPI specs)

Ask me to clarify, tell me it's a terrible idea, or help me find a dev!

Concretely, type inference for CUE lang in the context of helm charts in Kubernetes. I can find a budget, if I find the right person to build this, and we can move fast on it.

Goal: Programatically determine CUE schema for helm values file based on how the values are used in template files, starting from the schemas for well-known Kubernetes resources.

Who do I need to fund to build this?

  • We've been stealthily building a European (Danish soil) cloud service provider with all the security certifications you might want.

@oschonrock Yesss, you are very right! We come feom the world of helping enterprises/public sector with exactly that... the goal is alao to use what we are doing here via open source contribs to make better practices more easily available.

It is in our interesto to make it require fewer personhours to run a cluster. That benefit transfers to larger companies running their own, too.

@nils FWIW I think those concerns are very real, and something we have to reckon with — but yeah, also part of why this is hard to break into.

    @nils

Is breadth and depth of the ecosystem used as a general gauge of maturity/healthiness or are you looking for specific managed services/capabilities?

@nickgully Why do your SMTP instances get blocked?

SMTP is usually just a hard problem because the big providers are slow to adopt new servers to their allowlists. Unfortunately hard to act decentralized in that world today, if you want to actually be able to email everyone.

Tell me more! I'll see if there's a technical angle on it we can attack.

@trezzer Interesting, and not uncommon, I think.

Can you give me more spevific details?
Migration is often a big part of adopting a new cloud layer, byt we've found some cases where we can beat TCO of other platforms even including the cost of migration over a few years.

@valter Sure. What would you like to know?

We are currently doing enterprisey sales to mostly public sector customers in Denmark, while finalizing automations for maintenance.

We are building towards talos-in-talos, so Kubernetes for both tier 1 (VMs) and 2 (VPSes) virtualization, in a single stack.

The goal is eventually having an alternative to all the most useful features in big cloud providers while winning on TCO.

We've been stealthily building a European (Danish soil) cloud service provider with all the security certifications you might want. We've got managed kubernetes clusters, we are building managed services, and we are slowly opening to the first public sector projects. We are TCO competitive with the big cloud providers, even with savings plans - only for large clusters for now, though.

What are the top priorities in a public cloud provider today? What is keeping you or your orgs in US tech?
