I am retired from 40 years of writing software. And I assure that the help Claude gives would have made my life easier.

I am also an old Smalltalker, and very aware of Kent Beck's ideas, which Claude seems to embrace.

I'm also told that openai does not have the same model as Claude. Instead of being an engineering assistant what it does is assume you want it to do everything for you when you press the white do it button. And it just gives you the result without showing you any of the steps along the way.

I am also told that the only comparable process overlay is by an open source product named Aider. Usually any successful model like anthropics would draw more competitors.

That $20 a month I'm paying means I am getting way more compute than $20 worth. They're selling it at a loss to do customer capture right now. But in my case it worked because I can see the advantage of this tool.

Yes Claude is willing to spend my tokens on test cases and documentation, but I am willing to let it do that.

I started using Claude about 3 months ago for a personal project and I was pleasantly surprised that it nudged me in the direction of test driven design. It wanted me to build my test cases first. And it was willing to do the heavy lifting on building those test cases and on doing the documentation. Also the output that it gave was first rate.

I truly believe that in the right environment Claude is a fantastic engineering assistant.
