ok. but can we at least say the initial conflict was about defending AI? and that people dislike that? and that if they put in the effort, they might be able to deduce why you are saying what you are saying. but this means the disagreement is simply about miscommunication and not malice?

@cwebber I really maintain LLMs are like the microwave. There are some narrow specific uses where it's good, but holy shit we're still in the "True Believers trying to make Thanksgiving dinner with them" phase.

AI is not profitable. The companies lose money each time their product is used.
The only people making money on this is the financial services sector trading stock & issuing huge loans on "possible, perhaps, maybe" future revenue AND the fossil fuel industry powering gas generators for data centers.
The product is loathed and user acceptance doesn't match the hype.
What sane business makes itself dependent on a supplier or vendor at high risk of going bankrupt?

That is likely what heavily capitalized billionaires like Musk are hoping for; waiting for smaller AI corporations to get swallowed by bigger ones.
He gains their customer base along with the acquisition.
Or he could do another TikTok, convince Trump to force a sale to a crony under "national security".
The end result being all human knowledge under the control of a handful of oligarchs & metered out predatorially, with end users never sure if AI answers are correct.

I started using Claude about 3 months ago for a personal project and I was pleasantly surprised that it nudged me in the direction of test driven design. It wanted me to build my test cases first. And it was willing to do the heavy lifting on building those test cases and on doing the documentation. Also the output that it gave was first rate.
I truly believe that in the right environment Claude is a fantastic engineering assistant.

@compfu @TooMuchCoffee @cwebber I know someone who decided this week that he wants to finally understand the deep magic, and asked Claude to help him be a kernel dev while never writing a single line of code for him.
Claude gave him real books to acquire and read, and he's currently working through understanding how registers work in assembly code, with a ready tutor to clarify anything needed.
So far they have not cut him off and demanded any money, but he does not necessarily expect that to happen, given the load on the servers is pretty small for this.
Evil is in how you use the thing. You can actually force it to make you smarter, if you're willing to become smarter (ie. Work).

@lidsel Well, that's the key bit, I think - the actually good uses of this software, none of them require a datacentre.
Only investors require datacentres, along with slavery for all humankind. Investors are the only people excited about those things.
But computer programs that teach you how to use them by conversing with you in natural language, we don't need datacentres for that, at all.

Curious to see just how much of the thread on a quite pro-genAI subreddit is people commiserating on the exhaustion of their work turning primarily into tedium and poor engineering.
Bonus in that the Claude AI summary bot in the thread says:

A couple hours ago I was looking at “written by Claude Code” on a PR description that promised a manual verifications having been done, and all I could think of was “did you actually do it, or did your bot just write a nice looking text that you wish was real?..”
