@simon @richlv @owiecc @osrm what do you mean by "if you take what is currently considered base functionality as a start"? It was a feature that didn't exist and so yes it is indeed a new feature, but the lack of it was certainly an issue (getting routed around an area rather than through it doesn't seem desirable in any way). Am I missing something?

15 years after the original reporting of https://github.com/Project-OSRM/osrm-backend/issues/64, the ability to route through areas like squares, plazas and other open spaces (rather than around their perimeter) has been implemented via https://github.com/Project-OSRM/osrm-backend/pull/7161!

Congrats @osrm for the momentous occasion! Pedestrian routing in the #OSM ecosystem was already leaps and bounds ahead of Google Maps, and now it's even better!
