that's what the mastodon org is going to do. I think that's our best possible model, but it might not ultimately be mastodon. I could see most people on locality based servers that give you the mastodon social news feed functionality, but also stuff like you might want from Next Door. I hope Roundabout does this.

I have been trying to think of ways of making the Fediverse more Friendly and Welcoming.imo it's an insurmountable problem if you care about being decentralized. if you try to hide or sidestep it, you open the door to centralization. I think we're seeing that with bluesky.
I think you have to address it directly. make education and why we're decentralized into part of the messaging.
"we're different and that might make us more difficult, but we've chosen this path because it matters. for you as a person and society at large. our attention determines everything."

I’ve been asked on TV hits and interviews lately to explain why decentralized social media is better, especially re: Mastodon.the magic of this place is that it gives the people all the power over what info, ideas and art gets attention. not governments or billionaire owners of media or corporate platforms. (not sure they'd want to hear that)
the problems with social media come down to the algos, not social media itself. that's what we're proving. the algos push a tabloid culture cause they know we'll pay attention to junk, even if we'd never share it. so they push the junk and our culture dets debased.

I have been trying to think of ways of making the Fediverse more Friendly and Welcoming.how do you stop somebody from creating bots to fuck with that?
the fedi kinda relies on having a small network of trust and not having to care about the trustworthiness of those outside of that. jerks can be on the network and it doesn't affect me as long as I don't follow them or anybody that boosts their jerky posts and there's a system to keep them from being able to harass me.
we lock down the network unnecessarily when we extend trust too far. a block might be personal etc.

I have been trying to think of ways of making the Fediverse more Friendly and Welcoming.if we had 100% portability, we should have an intro server. only allow people on there for a couple months but we could give it extra moderation and hand holding. everybody would know to give these folks an extra level of consideration.

Happy to read about Roomy project that is open source alternative to discord that supports Activity Pub.it says AT now, eventually AP.
I assumed we'd get there first with matrix but who knows. we desperately need to decide on a standard for groups. and understand that this is a different use case (social networking, more private) than what we do with microblogging or the social news feed (social media, very public). confusion over these differences leads to lots of unnecessary fights over moderation, design and how we try to explain what we're doing.
one ID for both would be great.

WikiFlix is Netflix for public domain films, with no ads, no logins, and no data harvesting. -
Is social media its own thing or is it an attention layer for the open web?Is social media its own thing or is it an attention layer for the open web? Is it mostly about these separate things we call posts, or should every piece of writing or audio or video be able to be boosted itself?
I think that's the divide between #ATproto and #ActivityPub. #bluesky wants to dominate a world of posts like Gmail dominates email etc. Social running on a protocol but one company decides most people's experience. Or should we give the public full control over what media goes viral?

Should expatriate citizens of your country have the right to vote?imo you vote in one place based on where your "home" is. I get that this can be complicated in some instances.

"if you're interested in _______, join our fedi server where we talk about _______ etc.""if you're interested in _______, join our fedi server where we talk about _______ etc."
yea no. an #ActivityPub server is not a community. it's a portal to the whole network that hopefully provides you a nice name but should primarily be chosen for its mod policy and cause you like/trust the owners. one personal account and maybe eventually another one for work, school etc. #SocialWeb
but people have lots of interests and those each deserve their own private group. via #matrix or #lemmy etc.
