  • Have you heard of Apple's decision on the rollout of Siri AI in Europe?
    zsolt@mastodon.decoding.ioZ zsolt@mastodon.decoding.io

@richlv @mr_harm @EUCommission @gklka I don’t consider Apple predatory from their customer point of view. Of course they are profit oriented as any other corporation.

Since my workflow is centered around Apple devices and I like their products, I prefer using their devices. As a developer, I’m well-aware of the offerings of other companies, but I don’t like what they have.

All of these features were released simultaneously for us in the EU as they were for the rest of the world. Since the DMA, almost none of these newer features under this umbrella are accessible because they likely require compatibility with third-party devices. (3/3)

Regarding your second question, there exists a general feature category called “Continuity,” primarily for integration features between devices (such as shared clipboard, iPhone mirroring, and AirDrop). (2/3)

@mr_harm @EUCommission @gklka Siri utilizes a family of models developed by Google. However, reusing core model technology is not equivalent to the harness surrounding the assistant. Therefore, the availability of Gemini in the EU has no relation on Siri’s availability. (1/3)

@algernon @uzakl @tragivictoria @EUCommission @gklka I didn’t say to relax it. That one needs to be stricter, yes.

@uzakl @tragivictoria @EUCommission @gklka The cookie alert was the result of a regulation. It made some things better (privacy) and others worse (UX). Lawmakers should think about the worse part.

@algernon @gklka @EUCommission Well, it is hard to do. It takes a lot of engineering / design effort to make something open, but also well integrated within a system. (1/3)

At the end of the day the questions is still this: does it benefit us as customers to spend time on that because a regulation requires it? What I see in the case of alternative stores, and 3rd-party browser engines is that nobody uses these things, because Apple made them intentionally crappy, and the EU still accepted it as compliant. @richlv @algernon @gklka @EUCommission Yeah, we do reevaluate speed limits from time to time, because cars get safer, so maybe we can go faster.

    zsolt@mastodon.decoding.ioZ zsolt@mastodon.decoding.io

@algernon @gklka @EUCommission Yes, I’m not suggesting that Apple is the victim here. They do have to work on their products to make them compliant. However, the EU should consider the underlying reasons for this situation. Even with good intentions, the outcomes of the rules in this case don’t align with what customers want. Therefore, the rules need to be reevaluated.

@algernon @gklka @EUCommission Nothing is wrong with that. But that’s not what is happening in real life, and the customer gets punished.

@gklka @algernon @EUCommission We don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes, which is fucking frustrating, because as a user I shouldn’t even care about that. What I do care about is that I can’t use features of a product I bought (for years) because of political games.

I’m not saying Apple is doing the right thing here. They are not. But neither the EU.

@mr_harm @EUCommission @gklka Well, Apple users in the EU had access to similar features before the DMA, so it’s likely that some aspects of the DMA need to be reconsidered.

    zsolt@mastodon.decoding.ioZ zsolt@mastodon.decoding.io

@mr_harm @EUCommission @gklka I’m not interested in their back-and-forth debate about who did what. Apple is clearly playing its own game, and I’m not defending them. The App Store needs some serious reform due to its practices with developers. However, the DMA is an overcomplicated crap regulating issues that no one asked for.

Regarding USB-C: I like USB-C for now, but are we going to use this for eternity or what?

@tragivictoria @EUCommission @gklka What are we protecting with these overcomplicated rules that end up in annoying cookie alerts at the end? Are we forcing “interoperability” on customers who clearly don’t care? I’ll buy an Android phone if I want interoperability and replaceable services.

@EUCommission @gklka Hey, you should tell this to the three people using any “alternative marketplace” on iOS.

As an Apple user, I don’t care who says what. I buy Apple products because of their functionality and seamless integration. These regulations are negatively impacting the user experience of this integration, which you clearly have no fucking clue about. Nobody asked you to disrupt this with any regulations.
