Cryptos are limited too. People and organizations can't pay electricity bills or rent in bitcoins. Instead that's where the Digital Euro could play a role. Unfortunately it's still far from being implemented.

One way a bank could deal with this is as follows:
1: notify all customers that dollar support is ending, and any account denominated in dollars need to be switched to another currency or all funds withdrawn.
2: When dollar transactions have ended, unfreeze all sanctioned accounts and encourage immediate withdrawal to cash of all funds in case the US tries something else.
Alternately, non-US governments could refund the frozen account balances to account holders with documentation of US sanctions, then tax or fine all US business on their turf to recover the funds and make the whole thing revenue neutral. Tell them to recover from the banks after the US unfreezes the accounts, transfer to them the frozen balances in return for the taxes/fines.
This proposal causes the US to sanction its own overseas business entities instead of the intended targets.
Now from me: Marco Rubio is a terrorist, I am a freedom fighter. Tell him to ask Henry Kissinger how this works...

Personally I think we're heading straight to WW3. This bullying the US is doing against a small org like Autistici Inventati in Italy is just testing the ground.
As for me, I don't have labels. Nor do I want them. I decide with my own head what to denounce, fight for or believe in.

You can't fight for what you can't dream of. Watch out for those nightmares too.If the US goes to open war against Europe (say to split it up with Putin), all US demands plus the dollar itself instantly lose any relevence to European banking.
Such a war however would so crash the economy banking itself might collapse into hyperinflation and bank runs.

@LukefromDC We also need to be laying the groundwork for the next generation of decentralized social networking that can't be dismantled this way. The fediverse is incredibly vulnerable to DNS seizure (the technical part of the attack on A/I) to break federation and relationships across instances, and that vulnerability is entirely gratuitous from bad design choices in the protocol and failure to give users autonomous identity.

The real lesson of the US attack on autistici/inventi is that WE ARE NEXT. Mastodon servers mostly do not run things like PRISM, are often based outside the US, and compete directly with the Tech Bros and their ad and tracker supported shit for an audience.
Also lots of anti-Trump activism here.
If we don't fight for autistici/inventi today, we will have to fight for Mastodon tomorrow. Domino effects are real with Fascists as we saw at the start of WWII.
I think the #Fediverse is still under the radar for most fascists - but then again, the Fediverse is under the radar of everyone but its users right now. They tend to focus on #Bluesky as a hate target first and foremost, because most prominent liberals gather there.
That being said, improving the resilience of the Fediverse in any way we can is still an excellent idea - if Bluesky goes the way of Twitter, we will be the next target.

Especially when it is about a threat towards Mastodon/fedi it probably helps if everyone can understand what's going on and what we can do.

Good luck getting UK retail banks to support SEPA payments via IBAN correctly, at least, when I tried in the 2000s with Halifax as a personal retail customer, I got NO RESPONSE WHATSOEVER when I asked about it in writing, despite an earlier grudging compensatory response when I was the target of ATM card cloning. As far as they were concerned at the time, the regulations may as well not have been written, and I was well aware of them then and now. The situation may be somewhat better now, but it entirely depends on which specific UK bank one is using.
I can't do Revolut because they're avid LLM users and are too tied to Google in their tech stack, and their privacy policy is quite abusive. They make exercising GDPR Article 17 difficult as they are obstructive in that sense. I CANNOT condone or recommend Revolut in any way.

@dalias @LukefromDC on the one hand I really respect that Mastodon et al. Have managed to build a functioning system without getting lost in the sauce of cryptography, but yes we are literally at war with the ruling class so we need to be able to survive their attacks

@juergen_hubert First up for Bluesky is ID based age verification. They already have to block direct access from one US state (Louisiana?) to avoid this law.
