Stockpile advice is not realistic, say low income families

@vfrmedia @CiaraNi @BashStKid tbf these are our go to camping meals with packet rice, I'd be very happy subsisting on them for a bit https://adf-foods.com/our-brands/ashoka/shelf-table-products/ready-to-eat/ (The distinction between "vegan" and "normal" does make me snigger a bit)
@afewbugs sorry for piping up but I’m wondering how you get hold of them? @vfrmedia @CiaraNi @BashStKid

I just realised I've actually had some of these, I found them in a shop run by Desi (South Asian) folk in town when I had to go to the opticians (its on the same street).
Looking at some of the reviews, they are popular with taxi uncles, soldiers, outsourced workers and others who might be separated from their families.
There's usually at least one shop like this (and sometimes multiple) in most larger towns and cities (although I do feel a bit of imposter syndrome when in them as despite being British Asian myself I don't always know what half the things in there are, which is why I was attracted to these ready meals)

@vfrmedia ha! Id be the same but I’ve got no chance in the remote West Coast of Ireland. I’d need to order from somewhere online.

@vfrmedia do you remember if you thought it was ok? @afewbugs @CiaraNi @BashStKid

it was about the same as a "South Asian inspired" ready meal from a mainstream British supermarket, maybe /slightly/ better (or at least with more spices)

@vfrmedia thanks! I can’t even get those. @afewbugs @CiaraNi @BashStKid

@mewsleah @BashStKid @afewbugs @vfrmedia I see I am going to have to look up Izal loo roll. It's starting to sound useful. Multi-purpose!
@CiaraNi @BashStKid @afewbugs @vfrmedia unfortunately it seems its bottom fell out of the market
-
@vfrmedia @afewbugs @BashStKid @CiaraNi I had to look up what Izal is. It's horrible and I'm glad this isn't a thing in Germany
@LunaDragofelis @CiaraNi @BashStKid @afewbugs @vfrmedia We called it "Scrape & Slide".

@vfrmedia @CiaraNi @BashStKid my parents stocked up on tinned food after September the 11th, my Mum called it her Bin Larder. It took them years to get through it because it turns out no one actually likes Spam
@afewbugs @vfrmedia @CiaraNi @BashStKid We made Princes ham more edible with pasta and a mushroom soup packet, as a quick meal when I was a kid.
Although yeah spam.

@afewbugs Good to see this issue highlighted. This reminded me of a motivating news story here (Denmark) about Hals, a town of 2,500 residents, many elderly. They've pooled their emergency preparations. As a community, they've collectively made sure everyone has enough to last 7 days; there's designated shelter spaces; the local shop has pre-planned emergency stock boxes etc. Great way to take care of everyone, including those for whom money, mobility or space is tight.

That is a lot of initiative: I love activists who are thinking a bit outside the box. Old people will save us in the end :^)
“Birgit Sørensen, retiree
She leads a group of activists who are currently trying to get the town’s roughly 2,500 residents to prepare as best they can—especially since a large proportion of the town’s residents are elderly.”
