"Thirty-three states have banded together to sue Meta, alleging that the company was exploiting its young users on Instagram and Facebook for profit, including by collecting data from children without parental consent."

The damages could be as high as $1.4 trillion, nearly the same as Meta's market capitalization at just above $1.5 trillion.

Imagine a case like this going on but governments all over the damn globe insist on giving them even more personal data for age verification.

@stefan @bosconet In this case can used progressive Russian know-how: declare a "foreign agent", forbid all activities on a US territory and her jurisdiction. And invite to the exit from the territory of the United States, with all offices and employees.

@stefan it'll settle out of court for $100 million in "fines" and that'll be that.

Obviously not going to get my hopes up that we could see Meta completely wiped, but it will definitely be interesting to follow this case along.

I bet #META will REVERSE and say, but... "Corporations are NOT people, companies can't hurt kids, we are buildings and desks and shit"

@stefan 1.4T is a crazy large number so hopes are not high but I do find the idea of Meta getting single-handedly wiped out by a single exploitation lawsuit a comforting and hilarious dream

@stefan two things come to mind, people shouldn't be allowed to collect data on children AND they shouldn't need to have data collected in order to use said service as well.

This should also be how it works for adults as well. Data collection is something fascists love.

@stefan They need to also break up meta. Antitrust laws have been violated and the states have the authority to break up these companies

@stefan Regardless of what happens, if any damages are to be paid out, this goes up to the supreme court where it will be thrown out.
