One of the longest-standing issues with routing via #OpenStreetMap has been finally addressed!
15 years after the original reporting of https://github.com/Project-OSRM/osrm-backend/issues/64, the ability to route through areas like squares, plazas and other open spaces (rather than around their perimeter) has been implemented via https://github.com/Project-OSRM/osrm-backend/pull/7161!

Congrats @osrm for the momentous occasion! Pedestrian routing in the #OSM ecosystem was already leaps and bounds ahead of Google Maps, and now it's even better!

@waldyrious @osrm You know it is massive when the PR fixed is two digit: Fixes #64
I hope this will lead to removal of paths under pedestrian plazas.

@owiecc @waldyrious @osrm It surely won't (and probably should not, yet?).
There are many other routers

@richlv @waldyrious @osrm Sure, but I hope this puts a pressure on other routers to have that implemented.

@waldyrious Thanks for the shoutout. Come to SOTM end of this month to learn more about what it took to build this. For example, the extensive test harness.

@richlv @owiecc @waldyrious @osrm I sense a bit of a misunderstanding in general. It wasn't an "issue" to start with (if you take what is currently considered base functionality as a start), it's a new feature.
It is going to be a very long path before similar functionality is available in any appreciable number of routers, particularly on mobile. It isn't even clear what the best implementation strategy will be for mobile (pre-compute vs on the fly).

@simon @richlv @owiecc @osrm what do you mean by "if you take what is currently considered base functionality as a start"? It was a feature that didn't exist and so yes it is indeed a new feature, but the lack of it was certainly an issue (getting routed around an area rather than through it doesn't seem desirable in any way). Am I missing something?

@waldyrious @richlv @owiecc @osrm routing over areas is just not a standard feature for navigation solutions (currently) and you wouldn't expect it to work.
