All links in Mastodon posts count as 23 characters towards your post size limit, no matter how long or short they really are.

@FediTips that's good to know, always hated shorteners and also hate QR Code.
Don't like clicking on anything that I don't know where it goes

@FediTips Which is very nice, since link shorteners is an unsafe concept.

@FediTips I have a new challenge. . . To create the longest link the internet has ever seen, and post it to Mastodon.

That's good to know. Makes a lot of sense.
But then, I'm not convinced that post-size limits themselves make much sense at all, really.
Maybe people shouldn't be able to post entire movies, encoding in .MP4 / Base64 ... sure. But I find typical limits on X/Bsky make it difficult to express thoughts any more nuanced than a mere slogan. It's difficult to carry on a discussion that way. Reddit is better that way.

@FediTips Do you know how to get a full link to copy though? I use an ap (icecubes, and before that tooot), and if I want to share a link, it's like four awkward steps to get the full one to copy/paste. (click link > click open link in browser > highlight the full link > click copy)
I wish I could just do press & hold to copy the link and it would copy the full one, but it copies first 23 then dot dot dot, so it doesn't actually work as a link.On computer browsing on Firefox I have to do similar. I can't just right click copy link, I have to left click it to open the link, then highlight and copy/paste.
Essentially...why does the left click copy function not work to take the full link from mastodon? I wish they'd fix this. I understanding link shortening, but 23... is not a link anything can follow and that's what the "left click copy" copies.

I think there is an undocumented 500 character limit on link sizes

Just tried this in Firefox and right click, then "copy link" works fine on links?
What happens when you right click on a link, does it show you a menu in Firefox?
EDIT: Also just tried this through browser on iPhone, long-pressing a link brings up the usual menu which includes "copy link". Is this not happening for you?
