@davidrevoy The dark truth is that the vast majority (me included) can’t pick out AI very well. It has to be quite obvious. And imho the worst part is that all of this is big corpo. The models especially.

If you could run AI locally on your machine and train it with your own material, I think it would be up to you if you wanted to/what you’d do with it.

But they took that choice away.

@yon To be fair, I can't pick well and detect recent gen AI too... I also had recently this "feeling an art was AI" only to discover behind the art a human who shared tutorial, video of process, etc...

@DamonWakes @davidrevoy I don't really think it even has "that look" so bad. There's something about AI cartoon faces that (acknowledging survivorship bias of course) sets off my "I'm about to be mugged in the Uncanny Alley" instincts.

(and this is a bit odd to me, since I struggle a bit with actual human faces.)

Yeah, I don't get the slop ick from his comics and I'm pretty sensitive to it.

Come to think of it, Trump and most of the GOP look like AI.

            Everything looks like AI.

            Our greatest human achievement.

@davidrevoy Which is why jumping on people isn’t the answer to anything. Doesn’t help anyone’s cause. The false positives are just too common.

If anything it will become more a case of trust. I know your art from here, and I trust that you wouldn’t knowingly post someone else who isn’t at least reasonably trustworthy.

Basically human connections need to get more important in general. Especially with all the propaganda bots.

@doctormo Yeah, I think David once said that he created the font based on his handwriting, or a hand-written comic script? But the bubble one is really something! I guess they expected him to painstakingly paint the bubbles by hand instead of... using a vector template like most folks would.

@ToonLink @doctormo And I use the vector so the translator can slightly reshape the bubble easily without loosing definition; so, it's part of my constrain for the translation system.

Yes, for the font, it's 'Patrick Hand' where I modified all characters to look like my handwriting "Deevad Hand" with some constrains of readibility, accessibility, etc... I ran a lot of test before starting the weekly, like https://framapiaf.org/@davidrevoy/112303717759370313

@davidrevoy @doctormo Yeah, that too!! It would be so hard for a translator to try to adapt a dynamic text layout to a hand-painted bubble. It's all wasted time and effort for no gain at all.

@mousey 😵 Amazing setup, I had no idea there were companies like that. Do they handle boosting things? like followers count? comments, engagement? in exchange of money? It looks like each operator control at least 50 devices.

7 people, hundreds of thousands of SIM cards, more than 49 million online accounts. Gives you the sense of scale. Now think about how many fake accounts nation states can create and use. Those accounts need fake interactions to appear real. Such accusations are an easy way to get those interactions.

@ToonLink I suspect buying followers has been a business since monolithic, corporately owned social media convinced people that "influencer" could be a "business".. if not a lot longer.

@mousey Oh, definitely. It probably has its roots in SEO, too, though I admittedly have no idea what the nuts and bolts of that are. But especially for as long as a business can be driven on an "algorithm" and engagement.

Still... yeesh. I'd just had a thought that this might be where some of my recycled tech is going, and that gave me a weird feeling inside.

@davidrevoy I have this same problem with my writing in the past.

Since then I've learned that AI has been taught on my published writing, and also trained off my art portfolio so likely scraped the 100,000s of words there.

So the thing is, I'm not copying AI, it's likely AI is copying me.

In my case I have proof they have! One of the books I did a chapter in is in the Anthropic case, and I know LAION5B scraped my art blog for art, I am guessing they trained the 100,000s of words I wrote there too.

So yeah, I'm not copying AI, they are probably copying me!

These people don't need art. They need an enemy to vent their frustration on.

If only we could simply appreciate art based on whether we like it, no matter who created it.

@skobkin @davidrevoy oh no the AI hatred is TOTALLY justified.

GenAI is lazy and ruining our livelihoods - I stopped creating my watercolours because I thought what is the point? I am feeding a machine without payment, I am not getitng royalties for the folks who created stuff on Midjourney and Stable Diffusion trained off my landscapes.

And it does matter how it's created. If it's created by stealing all our work - and yes my work like David's is in the training models, then it's bad and parasitic.

And terrible for the planet...all that water in a drought for the data centres...ugh.

@faoluin Yes, that's what I'm trying to do. Thank you. But on bad evenings, you know... It's tempting to allow some of my self-destructive thoughts to be confirmed by these, and reading them all became hypnotising. I'll try to develop a thicker skin. Maybe that's just the negative side of attracting a larger audience for my work.

@davidrevoy @faoluin even bot comments aside, just the other day Evan Dahm was posting on bsky about how he was suddenly getting this big influx of really shitty (all cusses in this post are mine) comments on Meta platforms for a recent update to his serial - just lots of people who

                                        (a) are not shown *anything* from the comic, following or not, because of arbitrary algo bullshit, until all of a sudden they are

                                        (b) thereby have no context whatsoever about what they're looking at

                                        (c) but nonetheless feel completely entitled to make judgment about the thing without taking any effort to seek out that obviously missing context that had not been spoonfed to them

it's pretty demoralizing all around and it just further validates my decision never to go near any Meta product again

Don't be too harsh. That's exactly what metas platforms are designed to do: Keep you scrolling for as long as possible. And the "best" (well, for them) way to do that is using negative emotions.
