    @alterelefant @dbattistella

    We were told not to feed the beast in the late 90's and early 2000's as it was obvious no good would come of it.

    So peeps decided to feed the corporate beast for the next two decades to the most extreme levels imaginable so it looked like Mr Creosote and could not take anymore.

    Seems better to say we should all feel sad for feeding the beast.

        @dbattistella Fact check: very likely.

        According to news.com.au -

        The slicing is "a video from Canada's ABTec Solutions demonstrates the process of cutting books' spines prior to scanning."

        The warehouse pic: "Court filings show a warehouse of books to be scanned by Anthropic. Picture: Washington Post"

        The original reporting seems to be from the great 404media, but it's paywalled.

        Technically, the books are scanned and "survive" on Anthropic data centers. But I highly doubt Anthropic or any "AI" company is going to try to resell, donate, etc. their digital copies, even having destroyed the original. So the world does lose a copy of the book without any gain for people who don't use Anthropic LLMs or IP.

          Anthropic spent billions of dollars to slice the spines off millions of books, including very rare ones.

          AI companies are purchasing large quantities of used and rare books and scanning their contents to train LLMs. They then turn the originals to pulp.

          The sum of human thought, digitized and shredded. Every book that gets scanned disappears from the physical world permanently.

          Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email.

                      @DerPumu @LeslieBurns @dbattistella just download the pdf somewhere. also people could still make money from printing books, without copyright. they just could no longer create artificial scarcity by restricting others from also printing the same book.

                          @dbattistella Il s’agit d’une OPA hostile sur la pensée humaine. Une fois qu’ils auront confisqué tous les savoirs, ils auront le monopole radical de la connaissance.
                          Et cela leur donnera un pouvoir vertigineux.

                            @dbattistella This is a kind of modern "autodafé" and a true evil deed.

                            The knowledge and the stories in those books are, for some, lost for good. If tomorrow, Anthropic goes bankrupt, it will vanish in the void.

                                    The sum of human thought, digitized and shredded. Every book that gets scanned disappears from the physical world permanently.

                                    Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email.

                                      @dbattistella how is that a library when you can't check out books? Isn't that the main thing a library does?

                                          @dbattistella somebody needs to be behind bars for this.

                                          Absolutely horrifying.

                                          I think anthropic's argument is something like "books are a data delivery system. Once an LLM had read that data the book has done its job"
                                          It's f*cking sickening.
