I need to uninternet for today. It makes me so tired.

@troublewithwords this is very bad because AI is trained on Reddit and Reddit is full of people who are very confidently wrong about electricity and it will tell people that thousands of volts is fine at low amperage

I imagine they would need certifying by a competent authority before connecting any HV cable.

I imagine there are prescribed courses you must attend...or maybe Trump has cancelled the safety requirements 🤷

Data centres use both high voltage *and* high current, often 800V DC. this has all sorts of "interesting" differences with regard to arcing compared to AC, and is then converted to 48V for the racks at high current (so still a risk of arcing *and* fires)

@troublewithwords There are big differences between terminating low voltage (480, 600V) and medium voltage (4160V, 7200V, 13.8kV) cables. Low voltage you strip back insulation and land, maybe connect a crimped on connector. Still requires being skilled and knowledgeable.

With medium and high voltage, there are a number of additional steps required to terminate. Stuff likes cable shields, semiconducting (as in isn’t totally an insulator) layers, building up insulating stress cones, understanding why you need to do stuff certain ways, things like that.

That’s just looking at the most boots-on-the-ground stuff.

Just heard* Google doesn't have enough high voltage electrical workers for its data centers, so it has decided to use AI to quickly train up noobs to deal with transmission lines handling thousands of volts.

I need to uninternet for today. It makes me so tired.

                                        * Edit: To clarify "Heard" means from the mouth of a C-level executive at Google, not through the grapevine.

@troublewithwords I desperately (and deludedly) didn’t wanna believe this was true.

I searched it. It’s true 😭. RIP to those working on this project in the future. I hope it’s at least quick 🫠
