well throughout their teenage years and into young adulthood kids certainly manage to learn about things their parents didn't teach them.. the naughtier or more taboo the better, in many cases. Children have brains. They simply refuse to use them. If you doubt that teenagers have active will, try telling one they are wrong about something and see how the teenager responds. Or tell them they can't date or have sex or use drugs or listen to a certain type of music. Then you will see how much agency the young ones truly possess. How capable of rebellion they really are.

@FelisCatusDomesticus @KarlHeinzHasliP @cwebber I think you are underestimating (drastically) the role of child development psychology and how the brain develops in determining behavior at various ages.

How the hell is a kid supposed to make decisions we expect from adults, when different discrete functional sections of their brains are not finished developing, and developing at different rates?

Children are not "fire and forget". You can't let them loose on the world and then act surprised when they do stupid, potentially permanently damaging things out of both ignorance and irrationality

this is where parental responsibility comes into the picture.

except in cases of gross incompetence, parents are still in charge of their kids, at least until age 18.

let's not forget all common sense here.

when the parents are as incompetent with tech as the kids, or even more so, then this is a different discussion.

exactly.. parents are in charge of their kids well being until the child reaches age 18.

let's not leave all common sense behind.

@cwebber @FelisCatusDomesticus The kids grew up in a panopticon. I am sorry, but it is true.

The ONLY way we get them to push back is if we can show them that not only is there an alternative, but it is one that a person can thrive in.

@cwebber information is widely available in society.. kids simply don't care. they are more interested in Bad Bunny's superbowl performance than they are about higher issues. This is nothing new. Young people's trivial minds. It's a form of self-disempowerment. A phase everyone must pass through on the way to mature adulthood. That having been said, this proposed law is ludicrous.

The claim by the Colorado state legislators concerned is that this is designed to avoid sharing anything with 3rd parties.

They could simply oppose age verification software as the massive privacy violation that it is instead.

@michael_w_busch @cwebber "SB26-051, introduced last month, would require operating systems to register the owner’s age, which third-party apps can then leverage to determine if the user is an adult. The bill calls for the device owner to register their birthdate or age, but for the purposes of creating an “age bracket,” which can then be shared to an app developer through an API to learn their age range, according to BiometricUpdate.com."

It does say leverage and sharing with app developers.

@cwebber I dont observe anyone dropping corporate social media en masse or cutting ties with the megacorps that actively disempower them and have for decades

@FelisCatusDomesticus @cwebber This is true of adults as well as kids, though. The vast majority of people of all age groups are on corporate social media.

@aires @fluffykittycat @cwebber it's not just that, it's that their kid might do better than them. might change the world and make the world they (the parent) greww up in not exist anymore. and they hate that idea
