This goes for every single appliance & gadget except my laptop & my phone. If I want anything connected to the internet I will connect it myself.
I know Silicon Valley has spent a lot of effort to convince you otherwise, but most things don't need to be online.

@jwcph
I don't think that leaves you any choice, really. Except oldtimers, of course.There's even an EU regulation requiring network access, so the car can call for assistance on its own in case of accident. But of course the connection is used to spy on you as well.

@notsoloud - which is why I'm glad I don't need a car. But if I did then yes, I would probably get an old clunker of some sort, which would suck in its own (many) ways, but still better...
Also, that EU regulation sound like some successful tech lobbying, but there are still ways of doing something like this that don't require an always-on ingoing internet connection to the car - e.g. a "data diode" that only allows outgoing traffic.

I don't think there's a requirement for always on connection. Just some kind of a mobile modem. But of course it's used for updates and general surveillance as well. -

If an always-on connection is a requirement for safety, it has to be illegal to use that government-mandated installation for business purposes.
That's like if a business could use the police to try to sell you an alarm system or insurance if you call them out to a burglary. Or if traffic lights showed commercials.
Again: We have to stop allowing things in the digital world that we wouldn't for a second consider accepting elsewhere.
