Thanks for the support! Funny thing I wanted to plug here: I've never received comments like that here on the Fediverse , but I get dozens of them, weekly, on the Meta platforms (Facebook/Instagram)...

I'm really grateful for how this community checks artists' work and actually verifies it's real human art before throwing random accusations.

This is my favorite place to share for a reason. 💜

@kagan @mirabilos @davidrevoy i mean hell the whole reason LLMs use em-dashes and such so much is because they're so damn common in the writing fed to the things as training data, which is like the whole-ass point of OPs comic

@davidrevoy I think it's just something people struggle with, they will make deranged statements in pursuit of trying to seem like they're still on top of things.

I know it's easy to say, but don't take it personally, I've always been a fan of both your art and your open source tooling/process.

This stuff is one reason I'm really happy the EU is requiring AI involvement to be labeled as such; it works both ways, and hopefully other countries/areas will follow, so we can put an end to this.

@davidrevoy Your art is amazing, your local-first process is commendable, your wherewithal is admirable, and your address of the state of things is spot on!

Absolutely love your stuff. I love that the lack of algorithm in the fediverse doesn't bubble up "engagement" for you, and that you know you're really valued!

I mean, by me.. Whoever I am.. BUT STILL! Love your work!

I agree that it is an education problem. I can't say how much it will actually help, only time will tell, but here's my effort to make people more knowledgeable about AI: https://techne-system.neocities.org/program/level-2/topic-8/l2t8-iib-tech

The real trick is getting people who think they already know all they need to about the subject to study it anyway, to fill in gaps and clear up misconceptions. Anyone who went through some of the previous topics in the program, such as Critical Thinking and Education, are far more likely to do that.

@murdoc@autistics.life @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org I’m wary of recommending even the uses in the article (I’d would be inclined to say none).

Even people that do know how they work seem vulnerable to LLM psychosis over long enough exposure.

And for programming in particular, the ways in which they fail are so unintuitive that they end-up requiring far more (tedious, morale-destroying) effort in review than just writing it from scratch (and then having that reviewed).

The ethics & environmental costs are mentioned in there though. But I do need to highlight, ethical problems abound.

@davidrevoy Sadly there are not much we can do to verify if content has been created by human people or not.
Fortunately, many people don't care about that.
Unfortunately, I care about it so... I'm sorry if I have got wrong identifying an AI work and I've not treated it as good as deserved.

When someone uses em dashes with regular ASCII spaces, and ASCII single and double quotes instead of typographic apostrophes and quotation marks, then they’re very suspect.

@davidrevoy @kagan @sinewave (wish nōn-breaking spaces came in all the width variant the regular ones come; em dashes really need a hair space no thinner than six per em, even the narrow nōn-breaking space U+202F can be a bit much)

@davidrevoy On one hand, we know AI in general has a bias for yellow because yellowish images have a higher tendency of getting marked as "good looking" because of the "golden hour" in photography.

On the other, true, while AI hurts artists, due to that, even more for those who like yellow tones!

@mirabilos @kagan @davidrevoy it's still a dubious at best metric, especially since em-dashes can still serve a purpose—such as for emphasis and interjections like here—in text using otherwise regular ASCII characters

@mirabilos @kagan @davidrevoy the whole thing with AI is that it copies what it has ingested, the reason it uses em-dashes in the way it does is.. because people use em-dashes like that

@kagan @davidrevoy @sinewave look, if you go through the hoops to insert an em dash but use ASCII quotation marks, you’re at the very least suspect, even if just hypocrite or inconsistent.

It’s a sign of suspiction, not a metric. A sign to look closer.

@mirabilos @kagan @davidrevoy the whole thing with AI is that it copies what it has ingested, the reason it uses em-dashes in the way it does is.. because people use em-dashes like that

it doesn't come up with actually unique typing quirks by itself

@davidrevoy @sinewave @kagan it has to do with tokenisation, so inconsistences can come from that; the slop extruder doesn’t copy verbatim, it lossily uncompresses from its corpus

@mirabilos @kagan @davidrevoy an em-dash is literally just shift+altgr+m, it's not exactly jumping through hoops

meanwhile i for example have no idea how to type quotation marks other than the ASCII ones, and in fact prefer those anyway
