Thanks to AI eating the supply chain, hosting a website has gotten a LOT more expensive than in years past. One wonders what's going to happen to bajillions of small hosting companies that are profitable as long as all their equipment isn't 2-10 times more expensive than it used to be. For now, they're just passing the costs on to their customers. But my guess is the hosting industry is headed for a wave of consolidation and/or bankruptcies.

@briankrebs
Correction: hosting a *dynamically generated* website *without* a cache-friendly architecture will be a LOT more expensive.
If you are hosting a static site or you have a proper cache setup you'll see more hits/bandwidth but not much for CPU/memory/disk usage.
We just go back to the same optimizations from the days of PHP-heavy websites making database queries for every page load: fix your stupid site, stop wasting CPU and database queries for every page load. Cache it. Aggressively. Do it right. It's not even hard, people are just extremely lazy. -
@Viss @briankrebs I was gonna say, this might mean the return of friend-colos.

@WarySec @briankrebs Your next desktop will be more expensive.

@briankrebs ideally it could lead to everyone making their sites more efficient

@sf105 @briankrebs before there was AI slop, there was React

@briankrebs Electricity is what will kill hosting. You can always just use 2 older servers (that you already have) to do the work of one newer server that has been marked up by 500% at Dell since 18 months ago but if you cant power them you are screwed

@briankrebs this will spread across all industries. I've recently reviewed a purchase request of hardware for a bank: the cost ranges between 3x and 4x of what it was. And it wasn't cheap in the first place.
We're planning 5-6 year investments now and searching for refurbished hardware. Luckily our CSP (OVH) adopts circular economy inside, so the recycle their own hardware. This should keep prices from spiking, probably leading to a gradual increase over time.

@briankrebs I'm self hosting everything I can, right now.
Even services spared by uncontrolled costs have been falling to half assed (AI) DevOps instead.
I'm well past "we can pool resources to do better" and all the way to "fuck it, I'll do it, myself".
This is causing me to look much closer at what the Debian community has been up to, though.
I'm trying to catch up quickly so that I can contribute more, soon.

@briankrebs My hosting company just raised my rates for the first time in many years. I can’t blame them.
