Is keypassXC problematic?

@da_667 since you're talking about tradeoffs - is there any LLM use that would be morally OK to use? I don't know whether using LeChat or some apparently cheaper produced Chinese model (cheaper =less Co2) would be morally OK in your opinion? I'm unsure what the answers are.
@Frischling I'm going to level with you and say I'm not 100% sure how to answer this in a satisfactory way, but here is my answer:
all of the big player are doing henious things to keep their models running: hacking the competition, doing opt-in-by-default telemetry , scraping everything on the web they can touch, seizing land, drinkable water, and resources to build datacenters that are destroying local communities, destroying our climate that we kinda need to keep living as a species, etc.
If you want my opinion, the future is in running local models that you develop yourself. Then learn with you, and they learn using the data you are allowed to feed to them, not whatever isn't nailed down. and takes a city-sized datacenter to run.

@da_667 stupid question: what's the problem with systemd? I've seen many people who dislike it but I have yet to hear a reason or an argument

@Laird_Dave @da_667 it's already usable if you build it with cmake.

@jackeric @aaron @da_667 @cR0w Everything I've tried to install a BSD on has worked, just fine. There have been warnings about "ooh check your wifi chipset first" but ... honestly, things have just worked fine for me.
Having said that, if you have weird hardware, install whatever cursed OS on it that it needs, then a VM provider, then just run BSD in a full-screen session :0-) -
@cR0w but also, occasionally involved drinking hemlock so, I would really like seeing more techbros doing that.
@da_667 @cR0w yes, really, fresh leaves of hemlock makes a great tea if you are a tech billionaire, member of Herrenrasse or both! It was a favourite of the Spartans, gives strength and power and superiority, so it could only support yours, right? Ignore the tingly feeling in your mouth, that ceases after a few minutes. Adding a teaspoon of lead sugar improves its taste.

But then you're like "Firefox sounds okay" and then you see how hard Mozilla is deep-throating AI, and cutting their developer staff, trying desperately to be hip and relevant to shitheads who think hacker news comment section is the equivalent of greek philosophical debate
@da_667 well I'm biased., just started working for Mozilla. I wished they kept it low with the AI hype but that was my opinion. To stay relevant Firefox needs to be on top of the mainstream. And what that IS, is kinda hard to see from my geek view. That I have to admid and I trust the leadership. It's still great software that makes it easiest to opt out of Ai.

"I want to use a web browser that isn't deep-throating AI"
Well, your choices are lynx and that's basically it.
@da_667 I'm looking forward to Servo, which doesn't allow contributions with AI help. It's the new Firefox—and what Firefox was supposed to become. (Note: Rust accepts slop)

fellas, I'm gonna level with you. I'm starting to feel like computing in general is a series of trade-offs on how far you're willing to compromise on your morals.
@da_667 I decided not to go into medicine partly because I saw the moral challenges my father was faced with during his career. I picked computers because it seemed very cut and dried. I then ended up in #FPGA design, and discovered that the major industries are about #weapons (aka euphemistically called #defense contractors), and #HFT which seems like a race to the bottom where engineers are being named in lawsuits. Or #ProAudio. But now: #AI is in my face at work.

@cR0w Your curse is trial and error.

@nyanbinary @da_667 @cR0w I remember hearing that one of the BSD’s is problematic, but I don’t remember which one
I think it was freebsd -
@cR0w Use BSD. Accept the curse of "The Burden of Knowledge." BSD just works. Except when it doesn't. And when it doesn't just work, its because you aren't good enough to run BSD. There are no tutorials. There are no blog posts. There is no guidance, aside from an IRC channel where the entire channel is idle. forever.
@da_667 so bsd stands for BringSkillDistribution?

Use linux. Accept the curse of the automatroid: most major distros are accepting AI commits. Accept that systemd has been a cancer for a very long time.
Use macOS. Accept the curse of the Walled garden: You may run only what we tell you to run, when we tell you to run it. The rules change with every major OS update. You will accept them or you will go elsewhere.
Use Windows. Accept the curse of the hunted: You are being watched. You cannot slip your pursuer, you cannot obfuscate yourself. Even if you think you've hidden yourself, because of how convoluted Windows is, you can't really be 100% sure that you are not being watched. And even if you aren't you won't know whether or not a critical update re-enables the watcher in the walls.
@da_667 Trainspotting voice: Choose your future. Choose life. But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin’ else...
