Alright folks, it looks like the #1Password execs aren't budging. Their co-founder is framing critics of DHH as calling him "evil," saying this is "unfair" and creating a chilling environment. This is a nonsense response to critique of a man who has called for ethnic cleansing. https://www.theverge.com/tech/988536/1password-dhh-linux-controversy

It's time to #Drop1Password. Cancel your subscription and share a screenshot. Tell them why you're cancelling. You will not lose access to your service until your subscription expires, giving the 1Password team the opportunity to reverse their sponsorship and/or you time to migrate.

    @ehashman
AI, Electron, violations of macOS UI conventions, and now hanging out with Nazis.

Interesting that the rank and file don’t seem to be happy about this; I wonder whether any will walk.

    Anyway, time to look elsewhere.

@ehashman if anyone needs a new password manager.... Just use keepass with WebDAV. Why put your hand on a new stove by going to 'another online service'?

@alahmnat @becomingwisest Thanks for sharing this! Uplock looks nice. I recently moved from 1Password to Proton Pass — ruling out Apple Passwords because I'm trying to diversify (anticipating one day needing to leave the Apple ecosystem entirely).

But yesterday I learned of equally problematic things done by one of the Proton founders sooooo… ughhhhh

I think my options are either Apple Passwords + Uplock (which look nice for now, but increase my dependency on iCloud, which I'll have to undo later) or self-hosting something like @aliasvault or @passbolt, my current top two picks.

        Good luck, everyone!

@sycophantic you should be able to if you are on 1PW v8 and you’re going to a manager that supports FIDO CXP (I’m looking at BitWarden right now)

@ehashman I actually stopped giving them money a while ago. I'm still using the last version that could be purchased (v7?), and never moved to a subscription.

Of course, that's getting a little annoying now. I guess the obvious solution is to move to bitwarden? Or use whatever's built in to my browser or MacOS?

@ehashman I need to figure out the steps to import/compare with what I have in Apple passwords. And what stuff doesn’t import.

                                  Starting points for me/others.

How much of https://1password.com/compare/apple-passwords-vs-1password is still true, or applies to me.

                                  https://9to5mac.com/2026/02/25/heres-how-to-switch-from-1password-to-apple-passwords/ seems simple:

                                  Export your passwords from 1Password

Open and unlock the 1Password app on your Mac

From the menubar, File > Export and select the account you want to export

                                  Enter your account password

When asked to choose a format, choose CSV and select Export Data

Choose where you want to export your 1Password data and select open

Import your passwords into Apple Passwords

Open the Passwords app and authenticate

From the menubar, File > Import passwords from file

                                  Select the CSV file

                                  Securely delete the CSV file

@becomingwisest @ehashman I did this conversion a few months ago. There are some things different about the way Apple thinks about passwords, so there's stuff to get used to. The process of letting Apple fill the password is clunky. It will keep the url of the site; but you don't see that in the browser extension, so you have two steps where 1P had one. Apple I think won't let you have two different urls on the same site, it trims off all the subfolder stuff.

@becomingwisest @ehashman Apple will sometimes ask if you want to update the password after you've successfully used a password. Maybe there's something about that I'm not understanding.

Apple's program synchronizes across your devices and family shares. But it takes an unreal amount of time. I changed my work password last week and it took more than 24 hours for the change to propagate fully.

@becomingwisest @ehashman But Apple's product is doing what I need it to do, so I'm committed to leaving 1Password behind.

@becomingwisest @ehashman (Two steps: first open the Passwords app, get the url for the site; open it in your browser; then you might have to open the password extension (Apple wants a 6 digit code) before it will auto-fill).)

@becomingwisest @ehashman Apple insists on locking the app on a very short interval (a couple of minutes I think) and I haven't found a way to lengthen it. This is annoying if I'm fiddling with my Nextcloud server and have to sudo with the password fairly frequently.
