    @benroyce @bruno

    We see a lot of these at a local big lake around here but electrified, quite impressive and very fast as the water resistance is minimal with these hydrofoils... mostly in wetsuites.

    But apparently you don't need to get wet 😉

    Wearing a Bavarian dirndl in October in South Germany is indeed quite appropriate 😉

      This is called the #pumpfoil. She is #pumpfoiling

      You pump up and down with your legs and that motion alone is all that is necessary to translate via a hydrofoil under the water surface (like a wing) to give you lift and forward motion

      You need good balance, endurance, and if you stop pumping you lose lift and sink rapidly

      EDIT: this is Alina Kornelli. See @bruno 's comment below

      I'm one of today's lucky ten thousand.

      Never seen or heard of this before.

      Neat.

        @JohnJBurnsIII I wonder what starting out in the middle of the lake would be like. Could someone even do it? They'd need a paddle maybe. Or something with a very big hydrofoil. Imagine the effort to get it under your feet in the water then churn churn churn and lift yourself out of the water!

          Just had a look at Alina Kornelli's youtube page, very impressive what she does!

          I keep it with sailing, swimming and kayaking I guess 😉

            Just, you know, get the board under your feet under the water and have abs and legs of solid iron and just lift yourself out of the water in the middle of the lake, easy 😅

                Yes. Open water starts... how physical would you need to be.

                The swim back could get depressing quite fast.

                    @benroyce@mastodon.social @edgeofeurope@mastodon.social This is Alina Kornelli. A well known athlete:

                    The dress is a german Dirndl. A traditional Bavarian outfit. Often worn at Oktoberfest in Munich. Or even while pumpfoiling, if it happens to be Oktoberfest season.

                      Current is a new opportunity... characteristics different going with or against current.

                      Broadside to current could result in different hydrofoil motion. So turning would be a challenge.

                            I suspect the foil has to be different based on weight of rider.

                            Could you even get the board under you? Inherent buoyancy of the board you stand on...

                            The makers must have video of how-to...

                                the dress and hair did at least three things for the video:

                                indicators of movement and airflow

                                showing off that she’s stayed dry

                                season and place

                                That’s a lot to fit into a short wordless video

                                        @benroyce

                                        My friend had kids. They grew up to also learn "boarding".

                                        They've taken it to unbelievable heights.

                                        4 ft X 8 ft board. Couches with 1. 2. 3 people sitting on it. Or using 6 ft. Ladder.

                                        None of this stuff is fastened to the board... so learned experience is what it takes.

                                          I suspect the foil has to be different based on weight of rider.

                                          Could you even get the board under you? Inherent buoyancy of the board you stand on...

                                          The makers must have video of how-to...

                                          I think it could be done with a specially designed hydrofoil that is very large and very light. Expensive material. It would have to be a special kind of pumpfoil designed for open water starts

                                          Or an electric assist. Or a paddle you have to carry with you slung over your shoulder or else. If you lose it: you're stuck

                                          And with all these caveats, it would still only be possible for very athletic people
