@edgeofeurope doing pump foiling in a dress is certainly a flex, whatever her social or political views, that we have no clue of from this clip

@benroyce@mastodon.social @edgeofeurope@mastodon.social This is Alina Kornelli. A well known athlete:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alina_Kornelli

The dress is a german Dirndl. A traditional Bavarian outfit. Often worn at Oktoberfest in Munich. Or even while pumpfoiling, if it happens to be Oktoberfest season.

@horqua apparently (i don't know, i've never done it) you don't have to be strong but you have to have endurance. I suppose if you ran out of steam in the middle of the lake that would be no bueno

This is called the #pumpfoil. She is #pumpfoiling

You pump up and down with your legs and that motion alone is all that is necessary to translate via a hydrofoil under the water surface (like a wing) to give you lift and forward motion

You need good balance, endurance, and if you stop pumping you lose lift and sink rapidly

EDIT: this is Alina Kornelli. See @bruno 's comment below

              @benroyce @bruno

We see a lot of these at a local big lake around here but electrified, quite impressive and very fast as the water resistance is minimal with these hydrofoils... mostly in wetsuites.

But apparently you don't need to get wet 😉

Wearing a Bavarian dirndl in October in South Germany is indeed quite appropriate 😉

@JohnJBurnsIII the launch in the video above is quite calculated. I bet there are 100 wipeouts behind how effortlessly she did that. And for 90% of people it would be 100,000 wipeouts, if they could ever master it at all

@JohnJBurnsIII I wonder what starting out in the middle of the lake would be like. Could someone even do it? They'd need a paddle maybe. Or something with a very big hydrofoil. Imagine the effort to get it under your feet in the water then churn churn churn and lift yourself out of the water!

Yes. Open water starts... how physical would you need to be.

The swim back could get depressing quite fast.

Current is a new opportunity... characteristics different going with or against current.

Broadside to current could result in different hydrofoil motion. So turning would be a challenge.

I thought the dress added a lot of extras, I love that she's wearing a dress! Completely unexpected and fun 🩵

Plus; fuck it: if we want to wear a dress, we wear a dress. Nothing wrong with wearing a dress 💙

I think the dress undersells how fkn strong her legs must be.
