@fasterandworse lol i didn't even know i'd been opted in on mobile until i read this article. anyway, they have marketing people, right? they should know that 1% conversion is pretty huge for an action *they barely advertise to users* and hide two dialogs deep in settings
@aparrish their CMO is a huge AI booster as well

> ...the AI kill switch ... has been flipped by just 1% of Firefox users to turn off AI completely. And it's being partially used by just 3% to turn off some AI features in the browser.
THAT'S BECAUSE IT IS OPT-OUT!

@fasterandworse How many people who turned on the AI kill switch also turned off telemetry reporting to Mozilla? I'd guess it's a lot, but we'll never know!

> I think there's a general user sentiment of, 'hey, I didn't ask for that, and I didn't choose that.' The great thing about Firefox is ... we offer choice
mozilla exists in a bizarro world of consent

@fasterandworse a lot of people who would have used it also just ditched firefox entirely because of this

@fasterandworse they know because their community told them every step of the way, but they did it anyway and then did an AI slop video promising to spend untold riches on a thing people didn't want.

@emenel @fasterandworse The brilliant thing about Waterfox is it has a desktop and mobile app, so I ditched Firefox completely. #FuckMozilla

I am guessing that they know that thanks to telemetry. People who are interested in turning off LLM functionalities will be also interested in turning off telemetry. This might mean that statistical sample is not representative.

@fasterandworse
I think a considerable number of people just automatically switched away from mainline #Firefox in favour of a privacy-respecting fork such as #Librewolf. -

@emenel @fasterandworse yeah I'm in this group

@fasterandworse unless you get a repeated and enthusiastic no, you're good to go! Also, "I can't find where they've moved the setting this time" is a binding and irrevocable endorsement of your corporate policies.

@fasterandworse@hci.social it's still insane to me that companies can just fuck you in the ass and claim that because you haven't said no you consented

Also the kill switch turns off translations. Since I use those I need to manually turn off every ai feature and then go back any time new ones are added

@puppygirlhornypost2 Even if you say no, they'll assert that they're doing it for the Greater Good, and for the Benefit of All of Humanity, so sorry, but your ass is now fair use.

@womble @fasterandworse I would be genuinely interested to see the percentage of people who have never opened the settings in Firefox. I imagine it's probably in the high 90s.

I would assume that there is also a fair bit of overlap between people who turn off slop machines but also telemetry (especially when dealing witha well-known bad actor) -

@fasterandworse I didn't hit the AI kill switch on my Firefox because I kill switched the whole ass browser into something else. Where is that data from how many users they're losing, huh? -

@fasterandworse To all the homies who predicted that Mozilla was gonna use the kill-switch to gin up stats about how popular their AI features are…pat yourselves on the back.
