Just when I think I have acquired the ability to think about problem solving differently, I see something like this and realize what an amateur I am.

@JamesMDonohoe @LexYeen I had the idea after picking the lock the first time with a turning tool.

I figured that, with three discs in it, and no springs, that the discs would tend towards the open position (as the gate is lighter weight than the non-gate), and once in the correct position, would be more inclined to stay in that position due to the binding of the disc against the shackle. Since the shackle is in direct contact with the discs, vibrating them should rotate it to open.

It worked

@matoakit it's a really early version of a disc-detainer lock. The improvements mine has were patented in 1871, but shows a slightly more complex mechanism than mine, so I suspect mine is from about that time too.
