    @closeted_unionist huh I do not use Claude. I picked ProtonMail 6 years ago because of its reputation for security and privacy and moved there from Google. I did not expect the company to take such a turn (in 2020 LLMs were not a thing)

    @_elena @closeted_unionist You don’t, but Proton does, extensively, that’s what the comment was about.

      The journey of tech empowerment and liberation from tech bros can be a long, bumpy road.

      The biggest tech regret of my adult life is that I didn't use a custom domain name as my main email address, so that when things invariably go south, I can simply hop to a new email provider.

      The hundred or so email aliases I made with #Proton are a real headache right now. Time to clean up my mess.

      @_elena it simply takes consistency and effort to replace all e-mail adresses for all services by new ones. I did it in a few days, while traveling, four years ago. Only ONE site didn’t let me change the attached email address. Now they all point to aliases on my own domain, with emails hosted by Migadu (previously Gandi).

      You can do it, too, if you choose to move over.

        @hrafnagud @_elena @mailbox_org I liked Ellana's self hosting point. I just wish there was a self hosting fund I could give my proton money too and they would ensure the communities of the services I used where supported. The number of separate self hosted solutions to replace a web stack like proton is large depending on the services you use of course. Does anyone have a table listing solid recommendations? Digital detox seems to be the next move. I would be interested in helping with a guide if anyone else is.

        @gabrielmarkley @_elena @mailbox_org #Mailcow could be your choice - can recommend this for self-hosting and as a managed service but gave up self-hosting due to provider issues with my VPS IP-range always landing on a blacklist. If you are aware of the pros and cons, this can also be a good way!

          @gabrielmarkley @_elena @mailbox_org But yes, replacing the whole Proton stack is a thing here as well - Cloud, VPN, Mail, Password Manager… on the other side it is also said that you shouldn’t put all your eggs into one basket. 🙂

            @sebastian so I read reports by people who used a free account for a month and then did not pay that aliases ALLEGEDLY still work, even when plans expire. Still, I want to create a personal system where I do not rely on one big company for such a key feature.

            I'm happy I never used ProtonDrive and ProtonPass, that's for sure.

            @sebastian Sebastian, sorry I have an important addendum. People report that aliases created inside ProtonMail still work (after the end of a subscription), whereas those created directly inside ProtonPass are immediately disabled. So please beware. The discussion is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1xis0n2/proton_aliases_what_happens_to_them_if_i/

                      @_elena Oh wow, just in time, I was about to switch everything over to a Proton email these next few days, that was a close one😅

                      I have a few questions about the custom domain thing since I'm pretty new to this. How does it work if I need to switch providers using my custom domain email? If I were to switch, does it also move all my saved emails/folders/labels over to the new provider? What providers would you recommend?

                        @_elena I'm finding it pretty difficult to select a mail provider for my domain. Going with icloud for the time being but I'm not happy. Also I have a .im tld which is not ideal to say the least. I don't think emails and domains are a good thing altogether.

                                @andresti if you switch to a new provider you still need to backup / download all your old emails but you won’t have to write to all your contacts to notify them of the change or tweak anything… just change DNS settings (with a couple of hours to propagate the change)

                                    @_elena Oh, look, another one of the "they're on our side" corporations ends up betraying its users. Who could've seen it coming? 🙄

                                    @ticho @_elena The problem becomes "who isn't"?

                                    Like, I know Andy Yen is leaning heavily into AI Psychosis which will inherently and ironically make the thing Proton exists on: security, less secure. And WHEN they have an incident due to this, Proton is gone. Over. Done. Andy is an idiot in a suit and it's obvious.

                                    But is there another option? Ironically, handling your own e-mail server is extremely difficult due to the political safety layer and insecure for nearly everyone. What's better?

                                      @shanie @_elena As someone who has been running private mailservers for myself, friends and small companies for decades, I feel that I'm a bit too biased to answer this. 🙂

                                        @ticho @_elena I'm sure, no worries. I'll just share what I found:

                                        I was looking into Proton last year, but I was like "Surely e-mail isn't that hard."

                                        But then when I discovered you need to be on X number of 'good lad' lists to even get your email delivered to most places, I scratched my head and wondered how you even break into this in 2025 without a corporation. Talk about cold feet.

                                          @shanie @_elena My servers aren't on any such lists, if those even exist. It's just that thanks to thoughtful and secure setup, they avoid ending up on any of the "bad lad" lists.
