@iamnmm @sundogplanets Last time I talked to this specific person, he said that his job was "being a meat terminal for Claude". He said this with apparent *pride*.
I have avoided him since.
@datarama
meat terminal!? 🥶 @iamnmm @sundogplanets -
I really appreciate all the great advice and suggestions. I'm just... so disappointed and know I have to approach all my interactions with this person differently in the future. I've written up a long email, but I'm realizing that won't work as well as having a conversation with the person. Especially because I'm likely to start crying during the conversation. So. That's going to be FUN.
But maybe it will help one person be less addicted to the forest-burning plagiarism machine? Maybe?
Not sure if this helps, but have been sending this piece to friends who have become addicted: https://www.netmeister.org/blog/everybodys-lost-their-minds.html
And highlighting this quote: "AI is the tool that dulls its users; it incrementally replaces understanding with a new dependency and addiction as you actively de-skill yourself."

Guess I won't be asking that person for help or advice on anything anymore. Enshittification happens in people's writing skills too, I guess.
I also have absolutely no idea how to respond to them. If you're that far down the genAI black hole I don't think pointing out the ethical/environmental/cognitive issues will help. Fuck.
@sundogplanets do you know that they actually fed it to chatgpt or did they roughly outline their feedback and concerns and ask chatgpt to turn it into professional sounding and well formatted feedback they could share?
I could understand being annoyed both ways but i think I’d feel different about this kind of assistance.
I might ask them something like “hey it looks like you used llm - can you tell me more about how you used it? I’d prefer my unpublished work wasn’t fed into these tools!”

@sundogplanets Years later, I'm still reeling from when someone, during an actual face-to-face conversation, took out his phone to ask ChatGPT what to say to me.
@datarama @sundogplanets Man, if that ever happens to me I sure hope it's not when I'm at work, because an honest response *has* to contain the word 'fuck'.

@kentenmakto @sundogplanets My response, I'm sorry to say, was standing there like an idiot staring into air, my brain not really able to process in real-time what had just happened.

@sundogplanets I had a colleague put a manuscript through an llm. It wasn't even a local llm. The "work" it did was obviously trash. I will never work with this colleague ever again on research

@sundogplanets FWIW, a couple of people that have sent me slop messages in the past stopped after lukewarm/nonexistent responses. hopefully you'll get lucky too. i want to believe that some people are just trying it out because it's popular and give up after a while
-
@datarama @sundogplanets being proud to not contribute anything, ignorant of the fact that such people will be the first to be made obsolete and laid off, and then will most likely whine and moan and blame AI when they are being laid off.
@iamnmm @datarama @sundogplanets Leopard eating something something.

I recently had a bad interaction of this sort and laid it out kinda like "hey it wasn't respectful of what we were doing or what was going on for this tool to be used in the way you did and I would appreciate it if you did not do that with me in the future" and it went well.
Will have to see over time if it has any long-term effects.
Good luck navigating!

@ravenbait Yeah I will DEFINITELY point out that part. I have to think about how to say it politely so it doesn't just bounce off their brain.
@sundogplanets @ravenbait I wonder if it would be helpful to first point out to your colleague that it was THEIR opinion you were asking for based on their knowledge and expertise and your disappointment in not receiving their input. If you let them know their opinion had value before you point out the harm of their behavior it might help them hear the message.

My response would "why am I talking to you then? Give me your entire universe of login/auth and I will 'chat with your bot' "

@datarama I guess we will meet more "meat terminal"s in the future.
Let him marry chatgpt. Will end up fine. @sundogplanets -

@sundogplanets one of my childhood best friends and I recently had to have this conversation and it was rough and I definitely yelled and cried. I can only imagine how much harder it will be with a colleague where you’re expected to maintain composure.
No advice, just sending some moral support. These tough conversations are how we work to dismantle this mess.

@sundogplanets I find it so incomprehensible when people do this. If you'd wanted to ask an LLM, you could have done that yourself. It's like asking a colleague a question and getting back a response that's just a link to a Google search or a Wikipedia article (and nothing else). It seems like the implications are insulting, but it's probably more likely just thoughtless.
I have colleagues that have started doing similar things, and I also am struggling to find tactful ways to point out that it's unwelcome. Because it's so obviously foolish, it's hard to think of a way to point it out that doesn't seem insulting.

@sundogplanets That is disappointing. I honestly don’t understand why someone would even bother with that; it’s literally easier and faster to say, “no, I don’t have time.”
I think for anyone who’s taken that pill, appealing from a moral perspective is just moot. Of course all of those things are absolutely awful and destructive.
And absolutely everyone knows this.
Which means anyone still using it has already looked at the environmental, community, and cognitive damage and said, “ok”. And being on the receiving end a reminder of that probably going to just entrench them further.
Knowing that they made someone they respect feel disrespected, and that others’ impression of them has been lowered a bit? Maybe that would help.

I knew someone like that.
I tried.
For months.
But nothing changed.
Even a simple thing as looking up, shivering, and saying 'Whoa, do you think it will rain?' made him lift his phone, which he usually had in his hand.
While I was talking, he was checking his phone. I asked if he could put it down, which he did, but then he kept staring at it. It was all so pointless and sad. -

@sundogplanets
Erf.Apart from all the planet-destroying stochastic parrot problem (which is real and VERY problematic), you asked for comments and they couldn't bother.
That's unprofessionnal and deeply disrespectful.
I'm so sorry.

@sundogplanets I'm distant from this AI stuff. But if trust has been broken, then you might tell them about your disappointment. Basic information so that they might appreciate, on reflection, how the relationship has shifted.
