Hi!
-
@cmyrland @imaginaryuncle thanks for the shout out and for pointing me to @Saltssaltgirl.
@brianb You're welcome
I'm thinking about creating a Mastodon Collection of teachers, but I guess I'll wait until the feature is better tested and more available. @imaginaryuncle @Saltssaltgirl -
@imaginaryuncle@masto.nu Welcome! Glad to have another teacher and non-tech-worker here. My standard advice to fediverse newcomers is in the quoted post.
@2something hi! Are you a teacher too?
-
Emphatic 2nd!
Follow the #HashTags of the things that interest you.
Also, when you post them, please #CamelCase them. It makes them much easier to parse, especially for those who might rely on a #ScreenReader
Cheers eh!!
@ClintonAnderson @jztusk sorry to ask but what’s a camelcase? Help a noob out!
-
@sans_serif_girl I just read your intro post… are we twins???
@imaginaryuncle omg I wish!
-
@imaginaryuncle Hello! Former teacher here (long story). Also a typically voracious reader that has been going through some things that slowed my book count. I have a feeling that will be shifting soon. Whew! So, anyway ... Welcome!

@athena_rising once a teacher always a teacher. Same for readers. Glad to meet you and to hear you’re going back to reading soon!
-
@ericmpaq I wish. And no, I’m reading a book written by a Sri Lankan. I’m not traveling and reading, I’m reading books from authors around the world from my couch.

@imaginaryuncle Ah ok. I’m sorry from my misunderstanding.
So far, what country(ies) have you enjoyed the most? -

@imaginaryuncle How do you choose the culture from the nation to read from?
-
@ClintonAnderson @jztusk sorry to ask but what’s a camelcase? Help a noob out!
@imaginaryuncle CamelCase is when you capitalise the first letter of every word, LikeThis. So instead of having a #hashtag, you would have: #HashTag.
-
@imaginaryuncle i’m with you, my friend. I have been banned from/chased off of basically every mainstream platform by people who are either too scared of Trump, or trying to impress him.
This place is kind of my last stand as far as my Internet presence goes.
May we both find what we are looking for here.
@KnaveMurdok ugh Trump. I hope those people don’t follow us here.
-
Welcome!
Keep in mind hashtags are everything here. For example, I like #Music, especially #PinkFloyd. I have two #Cats and of course I follow the hashtag #caturday. I live in the #USA and I am #Retired from a career in #tech
Here you can also follow hashtags like you follow people! This is how things show-up in your feed.
@jchaven thank you! Everyone’s been so generous with their tips!
-

@imaginaryuncle I don’t think they would know what to do if they did.
-
@imaginaryuncle hey

I'm a chemistry teacher and I post what we're doing in classes every day just because. I talk teaching a little bit here and there, not as much as I used to on Twitter. I have mixed feelings about how that period influenced my work...lots of things to think through as I get older.
Welcome to fedi. It's slower paced, but there are still great people to follow.
@brianb thanks! Glad that my feed will have some teacher content thanks to you. I hear what you’re saying about how the socials can impact teaching. I had a bit of a reckoning myself.
-
@imaginaryuncle I don’t think they would know what to do if they did.
They don't last. We make sure of it.
-
Hi! I’m new here. I’ve tried Mastodon a couple times but maybe third time’s the charm! I have become increasingly disillusioned by mainstream social media and I’m searching for ways to connect with other people outside of an algorithm.
I teach high school English and I read a lot. Currently at book 92 of a read around the world project. I was a teen in the 90s and still trying to keep my grunge phase alive. I love art and film too.
Hope to meet some likeminded people!
@imaginaryuncle welcome! Follow hashtags, if you find nice ones. Then you will meet people with the same interests.
-
@imaginaryuncle yeah me neither. I left around the time he changed its name, and haven't looked back since. I had to hang around on Facebook a while longer because of certain groups and stuff I couldn't just leave, but I ditched everything Meta too a couple of years ago.
I tried BlueSky for a while, but to me it just became like a distilled (not in a good way), forced and desperate copy of Twitter, with all of the toxicity and none of the good stuff.
So yeah. It's the Fediverse for me

@cmyrland that’s brave. I’m still finding it hard to delete FB and IG. Everyone I know is on there so I’ll just lose touch with everyone if I delete them. So annoying. I also tried Bluesky and it did not click for me either. So far I’m having an amazing start here! Just hope it lasts.

They don't last. We make sure of it.
@TeflonTrout @imaginaryuncle Bless

-
@imaginaryuncle omg I wish!
@sans_serif_girl I literally just wrote in my journal last week that I want to learn tarot! And I also just picked up Rebecca by du Maurier to read! What are the odds!

@imaginaryuncle welcome back! Out of curiosity, why didn't it stick the last few times?
-
@imaginaryuncle Ah ok. I’m sorry from my misunderstanding.
So far, what country(ies) have you enjoyed the most?@ericmpaq too many to list! I’ve read some not so great books though. Luckily not too many or I would lose steam with this challenge.

@bemmesr I see! Thank you. I’ll make sure to do that.
