@lisamelton I could be misremembering but didn’t we all originally think that “we are the algorithm” was how Facebook, Twitter, etc all worked? And then the stories started coming out about how the companies were “tweaking” that approach in order to “boost engagement”? In other words, isn’t Mastodon just finally giving us what we always wanted (and thought we had)?
Original Facebook didn’t even have a feed. Just peoples pages. So you went to your specific friends page to see what they were up to. And you poked them, for some reason. I remember thinking the newsfeed was so creepy cause you saw what ppl were posting without seeking them out. Sweet sweet innocence.

@lisamelton OK, if you remember, please NAME AND SHAME.

@APBBlue Will do! 🫡

.Opening the door for AI bullshit is not even the worst part of this idea.
Folks, all of us here ARE the algorithm. Personal curation is a feature, not a bug.
We make Mastodon awesome by following people and boosting what we find meaningful, significant or just cool. That's how it works.
Let's keep making friends. Let's keep sharing. Let's keep Mastodon alive. Together.

@lisamelton honestly I'd kind of like a choice of algorithms - not "whoever paid to be in front of my eyeballs" style "algorithm", but, for example, something that would foreground people I follow who don't post often and tend to get buried in the strict reverse chronological algorithm.

@lisamelton if they want to create a mastodon client to do local AI for an algorithm, more power to them. I’m sure some people might like that, but it should absolutely be a choice, not the default.
I’m guessing that they’ve basically ignored all of the stories about Big Social’s algorithms being manipulated just to keep you engaged.
-
but the problem is nobody gets rich that way
@lisamelton@mastodon.social @the5thColumnist@ottawa.place
They definitely won't be getting rich if nothing works and nobody wants what they offer

Welcome. In case it helps: You can subscribe to hash tags. This is how I've found interesting individuals. It gives some of the serendipity of The Algorithm without the agenda, since you'll see people you didn't originally know about.
After a while, maybe you unsubscribe from the hash tag. I haven't found the need, but the option is there. For example, you might want to rotate what you're listening to as you settle in, every few days or weeks, maybe to try one or a few hash tags at a time.
@kentpitman @lisamelton thanks! That is a helpful suggestion I hadn’t realized that

I would actually like a big text field on lists where I can write some Lua function or something like that to control the list.
An algorithm that's fully under my control and not on the homepage would be pretty nice without any risk of falling into all of the traps of the big platforms (although whole new traps as I rabbithole into trying to make it just right for days)

@lisamelton I'm a pretty firm advocate for no AI use at our office. My simple line? "You are better than the AI." True here, too.

@lisamelton No, you re the algorithm, the rest of us just swim in the sea of Lisa boosts.

I often miss a really great post because the timeline is strictly chronological.That is, I don't see it the first time around.
Then I *do* see it because one of the people I follow boosts it. The system works.

@negative12dollarbill @lisamelton unsolicited advice: have you tried https://phanpy.social/ ? Its a different interface for your mastodon server and it has a very nice alternative feed you might appreciate.
I am not associated, just discovered it myself in the last week. fyi. Ignore if irrelevant

One of the (many) reasons I left twitter (both times) was because it was becoming harder and harder to set it to a chronological feed. I like my doomscrolling to be IN ORDER. -

My boss wrote all our stories in Claude. They were (and still are) unreadable. I took over writing all the newer stories. I don't mind using the random code generator for small things, but sweeping architecture agent coding just looks like we're creating a massive pile of technical debt on a new project.
If whoever wants to write some slop-lm to filter the fedi firehouse, meh .. everyone can do what they want. I'll keep mine chronological. It's more fun that way. -

@lisamelton They should of course be free to program a server that offers an algorithmic feed if they want to. But keep that shit out of my server, i trust the fully human algorithm more!
