Can anyone help with identifying this object please? Found on a beach in Fife, Scotland. It’s very light, definitely not a stone. I was wondering if it could be part of the spine of a cetacean? #AskFedi
@thebaywindowgirl Fossilised sea sponge?
-
@thebaywindowgirl @helenclayton I thought it was a fossilized crumpet.
@sheepnik @helenclayton I’d be very disappointed if someone offered me a crumpet that thin.

Is it known whether the identification by this auction house is correct?
that it s #whale #bone and not #petrified #wood? -
@thebaywindowgirl Not an expert at all. But to me it looks like some kind of sponge.

I would've guessed coral. Still cool, though.

#cetology #cetologist #marineMammals@sebastian @thebaywindowgirl I agree, looks like the epiphysis of a whale vertebra. From a younger individual, where they are not fused with the main bone of the vertebra.

@thebaywindowgirl looks kinda like the bones of some coral species. Also reminds me of a sand dollar.

Also, FWIW, real keys can be made from pictures of keys…
