Next up will be a VPN ban. Many tech-y people will see that and think “lol yeah well that’s not going to stop *me* from using a VPN”

A VPN ban isn’t really meant stop you from using one. It means when they catch you doing so, they’ll use the fact you’re using this harmless technology itself as a *pretense* to lock you up without needing to do any “hard work” (i.e. an investigator’s job) like actually confirming whether you committed a real crime.

Don’t think you won’t be impacted just because you know how to outsmart an ISP filter! This is not a plan to protect children or stop you from consuming adult media. It is a ploy to eventually eliminate ALL freedom of expression and free access to information in the UK.

And the same goes for Chat Control and encrypted messengers, btw

@jonah I suspect it's much, much less about locking people up than about having legal cause to shift from the "mass surveillance" VPNs help evade to "targeted surveillance" to extend the state's coercive powers

Govs have learned that "national security" has lost some power, but "protecting children" endures, especially while Epstein affiliation can still take down national figures

@rastilin @paul @Greylinux @jonah If this law ever does come in, the law makers will have a lot of fun trying to define what a "VPN" is.

At the basic level, it's just an encrypted network tunnel between two computers. Something that is logically and mathematically impossible to ban.

            @jonah
There have already been attacks due region-based subscription pricing. Since age verification introduced literally is nothing to stop it from happening.

@rastilin @Greylinux @jonah ah, sarcasm, if only I thought of using that... 😁

But yes, you're absolutely right, any government would have absolutely no idea about the difference between a VPN and routing specifix traffic via an alternative path than it would normally go.
And I'll see them in court.

@paul @rastilin @Greylinux @jonah don't forget that if you go to court, they don't need to be right, they just need to bury you in paperwork and legal fees until you give up or become impoverished and destroyed.

@jonah thia idea is deranged. There is no way on a technical level to differentiate between using a TLS VPN and opening a web site via HTTPS. In fact modern ZTNA solutions offer web portals that are actually websites that then give onward access through VPNs. This is some idiot that has no clue technically, coming up with a knee jerk reaction, that will never ever get through parliament.

@jonah what do you think the main objective is in that total control, is it just kind of an experiment? Another reason to fine people or jail them? In America, I think strict laws like this come down to giving banks our real estate in the end.

I think some are still missing the point. I’m not saying they’re going to lock up every single person who uses a VPN or watches porn.

Your government’s strategy is to make “crimes” like this as common and easy to commit as possible.

This way, if you ever do something completely legal which they *actually* don’t like, *which can be completely unrelated to VPNs or bypassing age verification,* they can pull up your internet history and easily prosecute you.

Organize a legitimate protest, and the government’s swift response will be to label you a child sex offender because they found you using evil VPN technology.

This is how free speech dies, not from a law that says “free speech is dead now,” but from draconian, authoritarian laws like this that give the government “plausible” reasons to go after anyone, which can’t easily be fought against.

This has always been the playbook to target innocents. In the USA, drug possession laws being created as a pretense for cops to raid and dismantle minority communities, for example. And now this is coming to the digital realm.

@jonah we definitely don't have space to lock anyone up on the pretext they might have committed a crime. But I agree with the sentiment.

The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.

@jonah They are doing it for a while over here in West EU this age verification for all people with ID just using the pretext to protect our children to have mass surveillance in place.
Over here it started with ID on sim card on a mobile, medical information and all in the ID card chip (all chips ping to nearest tower then 2 others to triangulate you if must ).
Then the pre paid Master or Visa cards ban.
Then the AI cameras every where. This Orwellian Dystopia is starting to have a track> France as well and in effect soon as other Nations in the EU.

The courts will likely take VPN use as a compounding factor that showed clear and intentional acts to subvert justice and break the law.

Using a VPN is also detectable, and would be like waving a flag that says, "hey, come check me out"
