Stockpile advice is not realistic, say low income families

@BashStKid @vfrmedia @CiaraNi there's a theory that the reason bee stings for arthritis are a thing in so much folk medicine is that your body can only process one pain at a time, so if you give it a sudden sharp pain it stops noticing the duller chronic one. I think a similar principle may apply here
@afewbugs @BashStKid @vfrmedia @CiaraNi
there's also this:
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11598298/ (paper on the therapeutic potential of bee/wasp venom)
etc., so maybe there's some therapeutic agent in the loo roll that science just hasn't discovered yet?
or, erm, maybe not. you might be better with bees. -
@BashStKid @afewbugs @vfrmedia @CiaraNi they both have their uses. Spam is perfect if you need a projectile to stave off bears or raiders (i also quite like it when it's sliced about 1cm thick and fried until it's crispy, but don't tell), and Izal is (well, was) a ready supply of tracing paper

stockpiling food wasn't even realistic in the days of Protect and Survive (although the suggested food list for the nuclear shelter wasn't that far off what someone living alone and/or with less influence from multicultural cuisines would have been eating anyway in 1981)
@vfrmedia @BashStKid @afewbugs True

@vfrmedia @CiaraNi @BashStKid my parents stocked up on tinned food after September the 11th, my Mum called it her Bin Larder. It took them years to get through it because it turns out no one actually likes Spam
@afewbugs @vfrmedia @CiaraNi @BashStKid the problem is, it gets caught in the spam filter.

@afewbugs @vfrmedia @BashStKid Bin Larder! That's so good. I see a running plot thread in a novel here, a couple eating their way through Spam, week after week, year after year, for so long that they have grandchildren who don't get the Bin Larder joke because it's now archaic.

@afewbugs @BashStKid @CiaraNi Izal loo roll is long discontinued, but Reform have been putting free newspapers through doors in parts of SE and Eastern England..
@vfrmedia @afewbugs @BashStKid @CiaraNi I had to look up what Izal is. It's horrible and I'm glad this isn't a thing in Germany -
to be fair a lot of the modern prepper stuff I have been seeing seems to have more enjoyable food and takes into account the influences of multicultural Britain (I didn't even know it was possible to preserve Rogan Josh in a jar, but someone up North was doing exactly that)
@vfrmedia @afewbugs @BashStKid Rogan Josh in a jar! I never thought of this. Suddenly my emergency stocks seem potentially more tasty.
-
@vfrmedia @CiaraNi @BashStKid tbf these are our go to camping meals with packet rice, I'd be very happy subsisting on them for a bit https://adf-foods.com/our-brands/ashoka/shelf-table-products/ready-to-eat/ (The distinction between "vegan" and "normal" does make me snigger a bit)
@afewbugs @vfrmedia @BashStKid Those certainly look like better, tastier ready-meals than the usual spammier kinds.

@huntingdon @afewbugs Three days' self-sufficiency is the default recommendation in Scandinavian countries too. Seems to be calculated to give emergency services breathing space immediately after a disaster. The seven-day framework for the Hals community doing collective preparation is something they decided to aim for themselves, am extra goal.

@afewbugs @BashStKid @vfrmedia That's a fascinating theory.

@moonrabbit @BashStKid @vfrmedia @CiaraNi oh gawd this is how I become Mastodon famous isn't it, as the woman who wipes her bum with bees, just as @TheBreadmonkey will forever be the Creme Egg guy

@mewsleah @BashStKid @afewbugs @vfrmedia I see I am going to have to look up Izal loo roll. It's starting to sound useful. Multi-purpose!

@vfrmedia @afewbugs @BashStKid @CiaraNi not just E/SE England we got a piece of Reform labelled wastepaper through our letterbox this morning here in South Devon.
It includes a membership form. I note they are now asking for it to be sent in an envelope with a stamp. I wonder what happened to Freepost? -

Stockpile advice is not realistic, say low income families
"According to Prof Ruth Patrick, from the University of Glasgow, the UK government's guidance "will appear at best tone deaf and at worst almost insulting to the 14 million households currently facing poverty across the UK".
She is leading the Changing Realities project, and added: "There is a profound mis-match between this suggestion and the daily realities for parents and carers on a low income up and down the country who are struggling to get by, especially as costs continue to rise and the temperatures drop."
@afewbugs@social.coop
Two words for government: Chemical Toilets.
Also: fire hazards of cooking stoves in top floor flats.
You can survive on bottled water, alcohol hand sanitiser in place of soap and water for hands, wet wipes for other bits, but not without a header tank of water exclusively for loo flushing.
Unless THEY are to be made freely available, the whole thing falls flat.
News reports show sheeple have resorted to Covid era panic buying, presumably the intent and are not thinking ahead.
The Food Bank dependant must be pretty screwed at the moment, given they rely on tinned food.
Corollary: this is a massive exercise in public deception.
WTF they are trying to distract FROM* must be serious.
Fecking BASTARDS!
*This time at least -
@afewbugs @vfrmedia @CiaraNi @BashStKid Kimchi fried rice!
@jgordon @afewbugs @vfrmedia @BashStKid For stockpiling? Sounds good.

@LunaDragofelis @CiaraNi @BashStKid @afewbugs
It seems West Germany in 20th century sometimes got better toilet paper than Britain, but the East still had rougher stuff
(I've flipped the language flag to those who don't read German should be able to autotranslate the Wikipedia extract)
