@sundogplanets one of my childhood best friends and I recently had to have this conversation and it was rough and I definitely yelled and cried. I can only imagine how much harder it will be with a colleague where you’re expected to maintain composure.
No advice, just sending some moral support. These tough conversations are how we work to dismantle this mess.
@mjg @sundogplanets I don't know but that "I asked for YOUR input. If I'd wanted input from ChatGPT, I would have asked ChatGPT." I guess I'm not understanding why any longer conversation is necessary.

Guess I won't be asking that person for help or advice on anything anymore. Enshittification happens in people's writing skills too, I guess.
I also have absolutely no idea how to respond to them. If you're that far down the genAI black hole I don't think pointing out the ethical/environmental/cognitive issues will help. Fuck.
@sundogplanets
Having been blown away by them once, you'd give them a second chance to be rude? -

I really appreciate all the great advice and suggestions. I'm just... so disappointed and know I have to approach all my interactions with this person differently in the future. I've written up a long email, but I'm realizing that won't work as well as having a conversation with the person. Especially because I'm likely to start crying during the conversation. So. That's going to be FUN.
But maybe it will help one person be less addicted to the forest-burning plagiarism machine? Maybe?
@sundogplanets
This really, really sucks. 🫂
Due to ways how my brain is broken I feel afraid to tell colleagues that I think they are deeply wrong, and yet saying nothing eats me up, be it queer issues or AI. I'm currently mostly sticking so simple things, drawing borders like "no AI in this paper", "don't send me AI output" etc., because that at least helps me on my everyday stuff. Each day when nobody sends me AI garbage is a bit better. But I do feel kinda lonely in my opinions and ethics. -
Have the difficult conversation but follow it up with an email to reiterate your points.
I've had to do this a few times in the latter part of my career
@cmsdengl @sundogplanets YES.
Because ... this is real stuff. It's hard but .... it's worth it even if results aren't obvious. -

@sundogplanets I made this just a few days ago about that very thing:

"I sent it to you because I wanted _your_ comments and advice on this. If you don't have the time to read it, please just say so. Being foisted off onto a reply generator like that is just hurtful."

@sundogplanets I mean... "if I wanted chatgpt's output I could have gotten that myself. I wanted *your* thoughts" seems to the point. Sometimes I think people need to experience the pushback. We all need friction or we'd be the worst versions of ourselves
many hugs

@sundogplanets On top of everything else about AI, what makes me sad is how much it has endangered digital communication because at any moment, anyone anywhere can just read your work into the slop system and then it’s stuck there. It’s a billion points of failure weighed against the basic necessity of scientific collaboration.
And they think it helps you, or them, or even the model, but it just makes everything more insular, and that sucks.

@sundogplanets - perhaps, hear me out…SUCKERSIMA GOATAND NOW YOUR ASS HURTS!!… no really, as if all political tweets, and toots aren’t at least facetimed…and good old Academic footnotes (YAY TEAM HARRIS) should be showing your work - keylogging and real time progress like the proud and frustrated #Artists of this superbombastic #elephantastic Mastadon often provide to the delight of those lovers of the real light

@RegGuy @ravenbait @sundogplanets
I don't think it is moot.@raymaccarthy @RegGuy @ravenbait @sundogplanets Was the original manuscript written in Word? Google Docs? sent via e-mail on a Microsoft or Google platform? Do any of these companies, even if they trumpet FERPA compliance, restrict what they feed their AI?
I really don't think you can hope for anonymity and a scrape-free experience in 2026 unless you're using LibreOffice on a system unplugged from the net.
But no. Fuck this "colleague."

That was a passive-agressive response. They could have just said no time or interest in doing review.

@sundogplanets I think just telling them that you sent this to them in private not for them to share with third parties and that you're hurt that they didn't respect that would get the point across (and maybe make them think about what constitutes "third parties" and why they don't think their chatbot's owners count) without even bringing up AI.

@sundogplanets I suspect a colleague does the same to me. Do they not think that we could just do that ourselves if that’s what we wanted?

@sundogplanets Like other knowledge, social norms propagate across human networks unevenly over time. You already experienced the wave of spreading AI risk awareness. You can defend yourself from risk or, your call, be a carrier.

@sundogplanets It always sucks when trust is lost from someone that held it with respect previously. Sorry that person failed to respect you and broke that trust.

@jcurioso @elduvelle @iris "they"/"them" can be used as singular non-gendered pronouns. (There was a time they were almost exclusively used as plural pronouns, but now they can be either.)
P.S. Mastodon thinks your post is written in Dutch, it seems

@diazona
Apparently 'they' for an unknown individual has been in use for a long time. Like we have examples from the 1300s in middle English through to the late 1700s when someone decided the generic pronoun should be 'he'. -

@sundogplanets fuck! What a kick in the guts. Trusted to untrusted in one interaction. I feel your pain – I dread asking for feedback these days in case it ends up being The Reveal
