What "sanctions and shit?" The US took over their DNS record. Big fucking deal. The US did that to the pirate bay, didn't stop them, did it?

I already proposed a workaround that doesn't require DNS at all. And would render future attempts at DNS hijacking impossible. Easy, cheap, fast - for once you CAN pick all 3.

For anyone questioning whether their domain registration was yanked, read to the bottom of this:

    https://netfuture.ch/2026/09/autistici-inventati-sanctions-status/

NXDOMAIN means your domain is no longer in the DNS system.

    So yes, it was yanked.

The DNS system is artificial scarcity. There's no NEED to translate between ipv6 addresses and domain names - just entering the ipv6 address in your browser address bar gets you to the site.

There are enough ipv6 addresses for every human that ever existed to have a bunch, so it's not a resource that is limited.

And there's no reason you couldn't bookmark it and label it whatever you want so you can find it by the name you assigned it.

No more "domainers" squatting on good domain names.

And no more yanking domains by enemy states.

@su_liam @barbra @david42 @anneroth @cavallette "The US is losing to a penny ante dictatorship in Iran, they can’t begin to cope with the rest of the world saying no."

But in the mean time they could pull the plugs on most European citizens' internet access and payment systems.

A continent unable to pay for any of the goods and services that they need on a daily basis.

NOT because they don't have the money but because the US has trashed the infrastructure.

@the_wub @barbra @david42 @anneroth @cavallette That doesn’t seem like an argument against doing business with the U.S., but the consequences of handing our leaders the keys. It seemed like a good idea when our leaders were only mildly imperialistic and treated you like delightful pets rather than vermin to be exterminated?

        @david42 @anneroth @cavallette

Who cares if domain names overlap?

A/I could have just asked people to enter their server's ipv6 address into their hosts file. And if you're going to do that, they could have self-hosted their own servers. It's not that expensive. Or that hard.

As word got out, more people could do it. Then people could have posted clickable links to the ipv6 address all over the place - no need for everyone to edit their own hosts file.

I was doing this 30 years ago so I could stream my music collection at the office over a crappy 1 mbps cable modem link - multiple connections worked fine.

@barbra @david42 @anneroth @cavallette wtf are you talking about? if they're on the sanctions list, who's gonna provide them internet access? they're not gonna have an IP address. and even if they bought their own block, other providers couldn't bridge to them without risking sanctions too. they can't even have bank accounts anymore!

I think you don't understand what sanctions mean...

It is slower in many cases, but has maybe it’s charm, too. There is no click to check them all at once, u need to open it and read it manually, no profit at all tho any tech-gigant

              @siguza @david42 @anneroth @cavallette

Obviously you have limited knowledge of how things work.

It's easy enough to give an Ethernet adapter ANY up address you want. That's one way to hijack traffic. But it's also a way to set up an independent network outside of any government control, unless they have physical access to the hardware.

Not easy to do it the hardware is outside, in this case, the USA.

DNS has never been needed for networking. So the government hijacking the DNS and having the record changed to NXDOMAIN, dropping it from resolving, would have no effect on such a system.

It wouldn't be all that hard to create a private network that way, using just ipv6 addresses.

Who cares if you ignore IANA assigned blocks, as long as itvroutes.

And with 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 possible addresses, good luck monitoring and blocking them.

Extreme times call for extreme solutions.

And that's before we get into Wi-Fi mesh networks, which the chinese, russians, egyptians, etc don't want their citizens having.

I realise that my original toot might not have made it clear that I was talking about a hypothetical future situation.

My point is that the US government can cut payment systems and internet services to individuals and organisations simply by executing an executive order declaring those persons and/or organisations as terrorists.

As they have already done to Francesca Albanese.

So they can do the same for any of us if they wish.

We cannot cut our ties, our tech/financial dependencies with the US.

Here in Europe we do NOT have the alternatives to allow us survive what would be a massive self-inflicted denial of service.

The US, on the other hand CAN cut our ties to them with considerable consequences to all of us in Europe.

I am not suggesting that we cut these ties rather that Europe sets up alternatives to allow us to function should those plugs be pulled by others.

Have you seen what the "normies" in the US are like? Many are ok with the ongoing civil war in Minnesota, the total grifter paedophile President, the corrupt supreme court, and open fascism.

Cutting off contact with them in online spaces and making small islands of calm where people can share without worrying about the place turning into a Nazi bar is a good thing.

It's like how there is no excuse for using x/twitter. Governments certainly have their own web sites, and they can have anyone who wants to receive government announcements sign up to receive them.

"But we have to be on x/Facebook/Instagram/TikTok" is bullshit pushed by people too lazy to think outside the box. Which is part for the course with governments.

You don't print cash any more? You don't have banks where you can pay your utility bills? You don't have chequing accounts any more?

We had all these things as a normal part of life, and we can return to them when necessary.

Canada has the Interac online banking system, independent of any American ownership.

                                So alternatives are possible.

Trump complains that IS banks aren't allowed to operate in Canada, which is a lie. There are at least 11 IS banks operating in Canada. It's just hard to qualify for a license, unlike US banks, which go bankrupt on a weekly basis.

There are more US bank failures so far this year than in Canada in the last 100 years. Tougher regulations.

During the great depression, over 9000 US banks failed. None in Canada.

So we don't NEED the US.

@barbra @david42 @anneroth @cavallette wdym "set up an independent network"? how are you gonna link up Italy to Germany without going through backbone providers who need to have bank accounts and can't risk getting on a sanctions list?

So do it on a country by country bas. Or better yet, think smaller - community by community. Small is beautiful. And dirt cheap to run. About the same cost as a pizza every two weeks.

Plenty of people self-finance their hobby sites out of pocket, no ads, no patreon, no tip jar. Why not this?

Just paid my hosting bill (yes it's gone up) $156/year. 4 domain registrations is another $100/year. Way less than an extra large pizza and fries every month.

If a couple dozen people aren't willing to collectively chip in $1/month each to do something they're supposed to be passionate about, they're not THAT passionate.

@the_wub @barbra @david42 @anneroth @cavallette I get that. Francesca Albanese doesn’t seem like an argument against cutting those ties. Correctly pointing out that the US can do the same to anybody only reinforces that.
I feel like we’re largely in agreement, but we’re getting tied up by language. I’m not sure how to fix that, except to try to clarify.

"In July 2025, the United States Department of the Treasury under the Trump administration imposed sanctions on Albanese under Executive Order 14203, naming her a "specially designated national", thus forbidding all US persons and companies from doing business with her, except as necessary to the wind down of any transaction involving Albanese until 8 August "

All she had to do was leave the US. Georgetown university isn't the only university in the world. The executive order only forbids American businesses and persons from interacting with her.

Simple solution, leave the Disunited States of Trumpistan. Live long and prosper!

                                      @barbra @david42 @anneroth @cavallette IT'S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY!

It's about the fact that non-tech people cannot self-host, for fuck's sake! And no, they cannot be expected to just learn that over night either. Maybe they could be expected to find someone capable to do it for them? Well guess what the whole fucking point of the collective was!

This is like a village getting cut off from the road network and you going "just build your own airplanes, the knowledge is all public, duh!"

@david42 @barbra @anneroth @cavallette maybe, but that would come at the loss of interoperability with... the existing internet, basically. So that would make their email servers and blogs much harder to reach for "normies", which... is probably still a success for Trump?

@siguza @barbra @anneroth @cavallette Yeah, but once their stuff is back online, reliably, in some form, there will be proxies for the normies to use, at least for R/O stuff like reading blogs.

Plenty of hosting companies well packaged with cpanel, a web administration interface with scripts to install all sorts of software, so you don't need to know how to self host, as you put it, " for Fuck sake.'

Blogs, bulletin boards, email accounts, content management systems, etc. It's all there.

You can also hire someone to help. There's plenty of people willing to help on an hourly rate.

"But it should be freeee!!!" Hope - people gotta eat. It's only fair.
