Wow! I was not expecting this at all.

@_elena German news still reports on this like it would only affect kids.

Nobody asks themselves how they know whether a user is an adult or not.

@Nux If you read the article, you will learn that protection of the youth is still a goal but not with that silly regulation.

The problem here and the discussion here should start at the lack of accountability of the social media big tech companies for the irresponsible content that is hosted. Not with restrictions of users. It is that simple.

And the moral panic about harm to children when the harm to everybody is apparent

These companies are vulnerable to regulation because they must sell advertising in every market they operate in.

We could make them open their algorithms.

The words 'Constitutional Council' look extremely attractive to UK ears, where we don't even have real democratic elections.

Electoral reform is long overdue in dis-United Kingdom
#ukgovernment outdated, corrupt, selfish and lazy, sits on its hands while Britain burns.

Would be great if courts in more countries would be able to stop the EU commission push for digital control

@pst @NatureMC @_elena I think you are missreading the situation.

In France there are few elected people believing the Great Chinese Firewall would be nice to have. There are also listening black boxes in the main general public ISP datacenters monitoring the population traffic since 2015. France has been very inventive to avoid EU penalities with them.

It's not a question that French gov doesn't want to monitor the population, because there are law proposals like that every few years. It's more that there are very few people still thinking that laws should be fair at some of the right places.

@Stefan_S_from_H @_elena everyone will be defaulted to be a 12 year old unless they show some ID. Like in a bottle shop. Or a trans clinic under 19. or else

                    We should…

Society cannot allow the manipulation of its citizens by fully untransparant algorithms and methods and by rogue state and other actors on these platforms that are affecting democratic processes and promote instability by spreading lies, propaganda and fake news, because that is what is going on. The social media providing these platforms need to be held accountable to prevent these unacceptable situations. It is that simple. Only then change will come!

I don't know enough about this to have a full opinion. But as a guy who likes privacy, this seems like a horrendous idea. I hope they make it non-horrendous.
