Your phone breaks. Your washing machine gives up. Somehow, buying new seems cheaper than repairing.

The EU is making the Right to Repair the new standard in Europe.

✅Repairs must be offered even after your warranty ends
🔧Parts must be available after the model is no longer sold
📅Choose repair under warranty and get an extra year of legal coverage
📍An EU platform will help you find local repair shops and fair prices

Less waste, more repairs. Good for your wallet, even better for the planet.

@EUCommission now every company has a great reason to make your everyday electrical stuff really expensive

"You know... we need more skilled stuff, a location to fix things, and we need to store 100000 spare parts, you don't want to wait for shipping, do you? "

@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu what the hell is this flowchart?

let's say i hate money. then, it reads:

should i toss my broken tech? a bit!

??? that's not the correct shaped answer to that question.

"am I a billionaire" with no/maybe? billionaires don't care about right to repair; they can easily afford to get a new one . why are they even on this chart. what kind of answer is "maybe". and why is the option of going to a "cheap" repair shop under this non-negative answer to billionaire? do non-billionaires not get to go to a repair shop? do poor people have to repair it themselves, with their own personal expertise?

also, the remaining two branches, while decent to demonstrate the intent here for how to reduce waste.... also are not shaped like "should i toss my broken tech?" . none of the answers are shaped like that.. the question should read more like "what to do with broken tech?" or just "my tech is broken". then, the "repair it"/"fix it" branches make sense.

both of those branches make sense in isolation but together are strange because repairing something and fixing it is the same thing!!! those words are synonyms!!! the warranty branch should specify "manufacturer repairs it for free + 1 year of warranty" and the other branch should be "buy parts up to 10 years and repair it yourself". the "billionaire" question should say "do you have tech repair knowledge?" and the other branch should say "take it to a repair shop, who will buy the parts and fix it for you".

some others have pointed this out, and i too will ask: is this AI-generated?? because this sure smells like slop. it is not very coherent.

There are already more alternatives for phones with alternative OS besides Jolla. Nothing for example.

@Catha @EUCommission Nothing phones use Google Android (with system-level Play Services, etc.). Some Nothing Phones have unlockable boot loaders though, like Fairphone and Google Pixel.

However, if you install non-GMS Google Android, you are in for an increasing amount of pain, since more and more apps start using Google Play Integrity. E.g. some banks, the Volkswagen app, and ironically the EUDI Wallet reference implementation. Yes, you cannot use the EU wallet on a phone with an non-US OS!

@EUCommission Maybe you could just rely on free market itself and instead of adding more mandatory obligations, just make possible create spare parts, service and allow to create whatever parts without need of license/approval to do so? A mandatory revealing schema after some time would be welcome too.

                                  @EUCommission Finally a good idea from y'all.

But what the crap is that slopware graphic that apparently nobody in your PR department read.

Moreover, you should think of something about phones and tablets with healthy hardware but outdated software. So many companies especially in China stop the software updates/upgrades after like 2-3 years. And moreover, they also make it too hard for the #FOSS communities to come up with alternative operating system for these devices.

Some companies lock the device to prevent installing custom OS.

Some other violate #GPL and they don't release the #Linux source code for their devices.

Some release the GPL code with a 1 year delay. Which means FOSS community is 1 year behind to bring custom OS to the device.

All of these contribute to #ewaste and they harm the planet. And many people are forced to buy a new phone/tablet every 1-3 years to get a newer Android version.

@farooqkz @EUCommission yeah...unsupported devices should be stripped off any locking, both software or legal.

@EUCommission now every company has a great reason to make your everyday electrical stuff really expensive

"You know... we need more skilled stuff, a location to fix things, and we need to store 100000 spare parts, you don't want to wait for shipping, do you? "

@GrundeinkommenAberRichtig @EUCommission Interesting, back when repairability was normal, things weren't "really expensive".

@EUCommission parts should be sold at a price that makes repairing financially attractive. Bosch is bundling cheap parts with the most expensive part of their washing machines, making a repair nearly just as costly as replacing the whole machine. That's not viable for repair shops or anyone really.

@Drew @EUCommission actually, kind of "repairability" score (like ifixit do have) would make much more sense...
