    @benroyce hardly. It’s exactly what he should be doing. The “weird” bit is how much sense it makes on a topic you might not have expected him to know. It’s quite readable.

        It's okay. I actually printed it at work. I started to read it and got distracted. I want to know from my own perspective what it says.
        When some people talk about AI, they do sound like they are trying to make a supreme god out of a bunch of 0s and 1s 🤔.
        He chose the name Leo because of Leo XIII "Pope of the Workers" and his stance for human dignity (rights of workers to fair wages in the 1800s was one thing he pushed for).
        That Anthropic is involved? 😕 Where do we go to understand this technology? Who do we trust?
        When I finish reading the encyclical I may feel it doesn't take a strong stance.
        Maybe it's purpose is to nudge the sleepy masses to be thoughtful about the technology and how it is now and could be used in the future? Remind people that critical thinking can only come from the human mind?
        And, that's why I printed it...I don't think it will give me answers. I do think it might offer better formulated questions than I've had time to devise. Will see.
        Thank you for letting me ramble.

            @Andii

            the thing is, *what* can roost in us

            give it a few generations, and some know-it-all endlessly cheerful AI can become the center of a religion. religion as it is is the same sort of know-it-all endless cheerfulness. it's a perfect fit

            i don't have a problem with the modernity vs religion issue at all. there is a place in our lives for religion. but what can sneak in there to fill that role in spite of anyone's intentions

                The #Pope has published his first encyclical

                "Magnifica Humanitas: On the Safeguarding of the Human Person in the Age of Artificial Intelligence"

                Is it just me and i'm getting old? Or is this genuinely weird?

                #Religion... #AI... feels like a creepy intersection man

                Can you "convert" an AI to a religion?

                Can an AI serve as a representative of God?

                Fuck it, we're doomed. We're not ready for this shit

                      @benroyce They converted an orange rapist, pedophile, adulterer, and felon into the next coming, worshipping at his literal gold statue, so “they” can turn anything into a religion. 😞

                      This pope seems pretty clear and wide-awake with modern issues, though.

                              Right.

                              Never mind that the very phrase "romantic interest" is merely a technical term from movie screenwriting cookbooks...
                              (I'm sure those are being LLMized as well.)

                                  @peterwyrm @benroyce @paulk I do not know, of course, what the pope wanted to say or what is in his mind. However, I certainly agree with the feeling that people behave towards AI/ML/NN/BS as a cult, and maybe, yes, as a religion. And the scariest part, for me, is that many colleagues, who, as scholars, should have a good amount of critical thinking ability, do the same all the time. I could give numerous first-hand examples about this, but it may get too specific. I will limit myself to saying that, in one case I found particularly shocking, an assistant professor literally told me that it doesn't matter that his method cannot explain what is happening in a certain system, because it is machine learning and therefore the final result will be correct. Even if we will be unable to say what it is, what has happened, how it happened, and what it means. I am *scared* of the cult that has been created around this shit, and I mean it.

                                    @paraw @peterwyrm @paulk

                                    the biggest problem with that, besides the "machine learning says it, so i believe it" cult like aspect, is that these are supposedly intelligent people surrendering their faculties. depending upon LLM to do their "thinking" for them

                                    if the supposedly most vaunted professions are going braindead, abandoning their judgment and critical thinking skills and devolving cognitively, what of the rest of humanity?

                                    fuck

                                      @benroyce @peterwyrm @paulk exactly my point. It gives me some sort of existential dread.
