The Facts:
Ceuta is not Europe. Ceuta is an enclave of Spain in North Africa, a remnant of Spanish trading outposts and colonialism. Ceuta does not belong to the Schengen Area; an uncontrolled border crossing to the European mainland is not possible.
Worldwide, right-wingers and racists are speaking of an "invasion." The representation is being artificially exploited through panic-mongering. The reality is far more sober and objective. Anyone entering Ceuta—whether legally or illegally—has not officially entered the EU. Ceuta does not belong to the Schengen Area. To get from Ceuta to the Spanish mainland independently, one needs either EU citizenship, a valid entry permit such as a valid visa, or a successfully completed asylum process. Spain and Morocco announced as early as Thursday that they would return all arrivals to Morocco. Returns began on Friday, and almost all refugees are already back in Morocco.
#Ceuta #Spain #immigration #refugees #politics@grassrootsforeurope also getting a very Point Roberts reference, but yeah, not really.

#Ceuta #Spain #immigration #refugees #politics@grassrootsforeurope Makes me wonder, if Gibraltar actually (almost perfectly mirroring Ceuta) is in Europe, as it belongs to the U.K. ??

#Ceuta #Spain #immigration #refugees #politics@grassrootsforeurope Another stirring of the pot for racists and authoritarians to signal and find each other better.
It’s not about facts. It’s about who’s on what side and who can you trust not to tell on you when you break some bones.

As of two weeks ago, transit between Gibraltar and Spain has been free and while Gibraltar is technically not Schengen area, the Schengen checks are managed by Spain and EU Frontex at the port and airport. There are also no more customs on the EU border for goods, which has caused Gibraltar to replace customs revenue with VAT.

@nichni @grassrootsforeurope@osma @grassrootsforeurope I expected it to be complicated. So thanks for clarification and update.

#Ceuta #Spain #immigration #refugees #politicsOK … so did all the people that “invaded” Ceuta (to use the loaded term) not understand that it was *not* the EU the way mainland Spain would be? Were they trying to, instead, “reclaim” the territory or something?
There are so many of these oddities over there … looking at you, Channel Islands.

#Ceuta #Spain #immigration #refugees #politicsHelping refugees needs to be a world wide goal. We need to stop fighting immigration and encourage all people to be able to live where they can thrive. I'm so sick of people being treated like trash.

@VE2UWY @grassrootsforeurope They'd have to be Portuguese to try to "reclaim" the territory.

@darwinwoodka @grassrootsforeurope I support legal pathways to migration and fully support the Spanish government's regularisation decree (which does not and would not apply here, it was for immigrants who had already been residing and working in Spain up to a cutoff date). Genuinely do not understand this type of thinking though. What number of young unemployed men do you think an average European country can successfully employ and integrate without shutting them off in poverty ghettos?

@Mnemosinee @grassrootsforeurope
What number of young men starving to death with no future in refugee camps is acceptable to you?
Frankly I don't understand your response. Colonialism created these problems but refuses to solve them.

@darwinwoodka @grassrootsforeurope None of these people came from camps. They came from vans driven and escorted by Moroccan state authorities, it's not the first time they've done it either (see: 2021). I know the fashionable orientalist view is that Mohammed VI and Moroccan elites have zero agency because colonialism, it's just that it gets reaaaallly complicated with Morocco seeing how the last time they did it was over THEIR colonialism of W Sahara.
