I don’t want a new phone. I want my perfectly good hardware to keep getting updates until it actually stops working. I want replaceable batteries that get recycled. If a company stops giving updates I want to be able to change the OS.

@akareilly Any device with firmware or software that is locked to the hardware should be open-sourced by the vendor when support ends... WiFi routers, phones, tablets, computers, televisions, set-top-boxes... everything... Until then there will be mountains of electronic waste that will choke the planet with toxic garbage.

@sticklandtim @akareilly Likewise, my Fairphone 3 is still going strong, on its second battery and screen and still getting updates 5 years after I bought it

@richiejwest @sticklandtim @akareilly My Huawei Mate 20 pro will be 8 this year. Same screen, same battery. I think it was the last gen of smartphone before they all went to shit.

It will likely be the last smartphone I buy. When it dies, I'm getting a Nokia.

@akareilly forgive us if we thought this was what buying hardware was supposed to mean

@sticklandtim @akareilly Highly recommended! I am on my first Fairphone and I don't want to go back ever again.

Really? I had a number of problems since the beginning. Still regular issues with Bluetooth, crashes .... It's the worst phone I've ever owned. Sustainability is the only reason I'm keeping it.

the only reason my phone that is over 10 years old doesn’t work is because of the choice to stop updates

@akareilly Too bad that's getting increasingly difficult for mobile devices, unlike PCs where despite MS' best efforts to lock that platform down, you can still nuke Windows.

Like, your PC is too old for Win11? Good thing you can still install Linux or BSD on it and keep using it.

If only mobile devices were like this and that market wasn't effectively rigged by Google for anything that isn't Apple.

@JaimeC @akareilly I haven't got anything like fairphone 6 money to chuck at a device. I'll likely next pick up an older Pixel and flash it with Graphene or Lineage.

@akareilly I'd also welcome telcos continuing to provide service to phones that could work with 3G or 4G for different bands. My phone hasn't changed and still works as a WiFi device but NZ telcos have stopped service.

I don’t want a new phone. I want my perfectly good hardware to keep getting updates until it actually stops working. I want replaceable batteries that get recycled. If a company stops giving updates I want to be able to change the OS.

@akareilly check out GrapheneOS, or Lineage OS which is less secure but has wider hardware compatibility
