Imagine trusting your privacy with a company who favors speed over integrity.
A Proton employee cautioned against releasing new code that wasn’t properly tested. Andy Yen responded to all Proton employees:
“That’s bullshit and loser thinking. Of course it’s possible to be fast and secure. Stop thinking always of how to be slower, and focus more on how to be faster. Only losers think like that. Stop lovingly handcrafting all our code and use AI more.”
Some of us keep warning folks to avoid Proton. Unfortunately, others, like trusted source @privacyguides, ignore the red flags and recommend it anyway. If you use Proton, you’re at risk.

@luckychronic right! I should have mentioned alternatives. Thanks for the prompt.
Here are suggestions I stand behind. But each person has to conduct their own research/audit.

@markwyner Thank you, Mark, for sharing all this information about Proton. I'm a Proton user but have always felt a little iffy about it because its design & layout completely mimic Google to the point that I think it's Google, but overseas, to evade US laws. Afterall, why isn't Google suing for design, layout infringement? I now only use it for junk mail.

@markwyner @luckychronic I'm in the same boat as Lucky here. I need something free and Tuta seems to be the only good free option. Just like them, I already have one account in Tuta, but I need one other. As far as I can tell both of those others aren't actually free. They just have a free trial which means they cost money after 30 days or whatever. Also, Fastmail keeps backups of all your data in the US even if you select an EU server so that kind of defeats the purpose on that.
Tuta is absolutely great, but IMO everyone needs to have two accounts, not one.
