@jamesthomson My understanding of GDPR is that they’re legally required to have the reject all button be top level and the same size as the accept all button. Unfortunately that’s enforced approximately never 😕

@jamesthomson unsure that “reject all” unchecks “«legitimate» use” crap and that it affects anything even when unchecked. 😞

@jamesthomson This is why I have used a lot of private browsing to read articles on completely legit sites. I simply click on Accept all, read what I need and close it, hoping the browser won’t leave any trail behind on my device. The only downside is that the tracking will be 100 % enabled on their side, in the logs and maybe some database or they will sell my data to third-parties.

So … no, it’s not ideal. I just find it practical if I absolutely want to visit the website.

@jamesthomson I'm currently in a project where we will be changing the presentation of a cookie banner. It's currently a typical (but compliant) "Allow All" / "Essential Only".

UK law changed and there is no longer a requirement for there to be a "reject all" because "we" are allowed to do some collectiong of data for analytics, A:B testing and some other things.

I'm not sure if we're going to be one of the first, big sites that will be doing this

@avakining @jamesthomson The ICO are not the most well funded org. I have been part of the process where they put a site under investigation (my understanding is they tend to pick on the top 1,000 most popular UK sites).

They did not bring up the mismatch in size of accept versus reject buttons, but they were absolutely on the ball with checking what cookies / platforms were collecting data without proper consent.

@jamesthomson I want to meet the person who sees a cookie dialog and thinks “hm, yes, 110 advertising partners deserve a little treat today”

@isaaclyman @jamesthomson Maybe they even pay to show up as an advertiser. Kind of a marketing scheme?
