    This is depressing. Perfectly good alternatives to all Adobe have existed for many years and are used at pro level, but someone hallucinates some code with claude (which I hear was trained on code of programs like gimp and inkscape) and suddenly everyone is raving about it being the end of Adobe, though the thing they praise is at best entry level stuff. But like other snake oil sellers, they claim it will get there, though their "in one month" is now "many months" #artcraft #foss

    @dilmandila
    Oh, this is what happened? I read about it briefly yesterday and was wondering how someone would even do that and if it was really better than the alternatives we already have.

        @dilmandila it was sad to try it and realize it doesn’t do basic stuff, like filter or delete when it says it deleted.

          @dilmandila @Gargron I love Gimp! Because of it, I don't even know how to work on Photoshop. But, TBF, I'm not a pro user.

              @dilmandila Same thoughts here... But most people also claim that they need Microsoft Word because you can't get anything done with LibreOffice. Or that they actually need Photoshop instead of Gimp. Hell, let them vibecode what they feel like. At least it's open source and it might dispell some of the magic of pricey closed software. Personally I always believed that software should be free and with AI there's much less incentive to steal code anyway...

                @dilmandila I wonder how many more times they can rediscover that making the code is almost the least important or difficult part of software development before it actually sinks in 🤔

                    @dilmandila I perceive a gap with techbros whose opinion clearly shifted in the past 6 months. Beforehand they were against the AI written software big wave. Now it's just "whatever if people stop using paid software"
                    People 👏 the point of FOSS is to be out of capitalism and all of its parts. AI is capitalism. Throw it away! Software won't be free if it's built with AI

                      @dilmandila there have been a few sensible and serious reviews of this slop and they all find the same fundamental problems. Turns out it’s easy to churn out somethjng that looks just like the adobe ui but of course it doesn’t actually work.

                        @dilmandila I barely managed to get After Effects 24 running under Linux and render stuff there. There is also EffectsCraft...

                        It is bad though that it is not hand made. But for my use case, I need animation more.

                          @dilmandila totally agree with you and find the raging weird and off putting.

                          The only way the optimism might make sense to me (being one who feels trapped by Adobe) is that the new software claims to be able to open and save Adobe formats perfectly. The FOSS software can’t do this. Being able to handle Adobe files well is a prerequisite to making a clean break with Adobe.

                          Otherwise, the hue is completely misdirected.

                                  I like the foss alternatives but i like the copycats better because I don't have to retrain myself to use them.the copycats have essentially the same layout and shortcuts that creatives spent years using.

                                    @dilmandila @Gargron I haven't dug deeply into the matter, but I took it as an ironic way of confronting Adobe with its own contradictions: they have no issue about training their models without compensating the artists whose work is used as training data (and devalued in the process), so if they attack this project, they implicitly attack their own practices too.

                                        @dr_laemmerbein @dilmandila GIMP is not an appropriate replacement for Photoshop unless your use case for Photoshop is just experimentation. That's what GIMP was made as, that's why GIMP makes no effort to accommodate artists.

                                          @kyle_pegasus I guess it depends on what you use it for. I'm using darktable and Gimp for photography and I'm perfectly happy with the feature set.
