Have you #DeGoogled your search?

@markmetz No, Startpage is from the Netherlands
@egzuits
Ah, good. Although some of the other comments here are making me a bit leery about it too. -
I believe if you add &k1=-1 to your search URL it also removes ads
@jackgedge Ah, great tip - I have adblock on most devices but not everything so I will definitely use this, thanks

@jackgedge @roddie I have ad-blockers on every device.
And a pi-hole at home between me and the interwebs.
I have stopped using devices that make it difficult for me to block adverts.
-
@roddie @rguy In the old days of Firefox you could go to the add-ons website and "install" a search engine.
But only if someone had taken the time to make the particular variant you wanted.
In those days I used to have multiple DDG search engines in Firefox to allow me to search in different countries.
That is until Mozilla changed how search engines were displayed in the search field drop down menu making it was no longer possible to differentiate between the different instances of DDG.

@the_wub @jackgedge I use browser-based adblockers and a Pi-hole as well but I do remember seeing an ad result from DDG recently, I just can't remember which device

Ah, good. Although some of the other comments here are making me a bit leery about it too.@markmetz They don't seem to collect any data so it should be fine, but it does still worry me.
I'd recommend looking into their privacy policy at startpage.com/privacy-policy -

While many alternative search engines to Google still rely on Google or Bing's search index, it's still worth making the switch.

@Tutanota @ecosia @Qwant @kagihq @StartpageSearch how about brave search? And why is DDG 4 stars?

@Tutanota @ecosia @Qwant @kagihq @StartpageSearch @duckduckgo It's usually DuckDuckGo, although I'll use others on occasion.

@Tutanota I use DDG no ai or brave search depending on which browser I use (Vivaldi or Librewolf)
Brave is really good and works without JavaScript but does push reddit hard and the CEO of brave is a piece of shit. No JavaScript blocks their AI too.
DDG No AI is fine for results too but gives me a forbidden error with JavaScript blocked and relies on bing more than I'd like
Used to use ecosia but kept getting nagged by cloudflare checks so I left

Dutch Startpage is indeed default in Norwegian Vivaldi. -

@Tutanota @ecosia @Qwant @kagihq @StartpageSearch @duckduckgo I've just subscribed for Kagi yesterday. I've been eyeing them for about a year now, but was always hesitant to start paying for searches. But I finally made the move. I'm sure it will pay off, because last time I blew the free 100 searches in about 2 days.

I would be careful with startpageStartpage is owned and operated by Surfboard Holding BV, which is majority owned by System1, an American internet advertising company.
System1 is an American Internet advertising company. Formerly known as OpenMail, it was founded in 2013. It describes itself as operating a "Responsive Acquisition Marketing Platform", and cites privacy as one of its principal foci, although it has been criticized for its influence on privacy-focused properties, including search engine Startpage.com. It is headquartered in Marina del Rey, California.
The Startpage acquisition was done through System1's subsidiary Privacy One Group Ltd.
