So apparently all the coordination, planning and communications for organising No Kings events on Instagram have disappeared and the account admins have been suspended.

@ambiguous0 I don't think Meta gives a shit. They are incredibly shortsighted and greedy as evidenced by their overt support of Trump.
@Remittancegirl
Meta supplies arms to both sides of conflicts, profits regardless of the result. -
the Fediverse ?
@RainbowFrog @violettejean @Remittancegirl
I don't think so. The culture here is downright hostile to newcomers and different opinions. The technology itself is hard to use.

So... here's the thing:
DON'T PLAN YOUR REVOLUTION ON THE KING'S BLACKBOARD.
The fact that organisers are depending on the availability of a platform run by any of the tech bros... well, it makes me think you aren't a terribly effective opposition.
@Remittancegirl Meta really has placed their chips on the authoritarian squares.
I guess Meta is betting the Trump admin will steal the election, and proceed to ban all other social media, because they just gave tens of millions of people the perfect excuse to leave and never come back.
There's no other way to square this circle. They're all in.
-
No, really. Fuck right off.
I know a shit ton about Mao. And there's very little daylight between him and Trump except he was more energetic and more murderous.
@Remittancegirl @sampler Tankies are dead wrong, too.
Soviet Union was state capitalism. Lenin himself admitted it. Socialism was never achieved through authoritarianism, and it never will be.
-
@Remittancegirl the ruling class WANTS you to protest peacefully as they sleep peacefully on Saturdays. Change that. Raise some hell during busy weekday hours that stop the flow of business.
@raoulduke26 @Remittancegirl Yes. BUT..
Protests are still very good networking opportunities for people that want to go beyond just marching.
There are plenty of people like that. Cynicism is warranted but it's not everything there is. -

It's anything BUT a revolution. "No Kings" is financed and run by the DNC, who in turn are financed and owned by the oligarchs. The No Kings events are just pressure valves designed to let neoliberals blow off steam and tell themselves that they're making a difference, while in fact all they're doing is supporting the fascist Powers-That-Be.That's why they never ask for impeachment. Or an end to the genocide in Gaza. Or the imposition of ANY meaningful taxes on billionaires.
And the "protests" are always held on Saturdays, just to make 100% sure that they won't turn into anything like a general strike.
The Democratic Party is the second string team for fascism. And BOTH parties are owned by the same Nazi billionaires.

@Remittancegirl go bring them over here on Mastodon and show them around ?

@Remittancegirl go bring them over here on Mastodon and show them around ?
@politipet I'm not American.
-
@Remittancegirl I think this is going to backfire. It's not like messing with the logistic organizing of entirely symbolic protest events is going to break movements or anything. But it will radicalize some previously non-radical folks to the idea that big tech is their enemy.
@dalias True. That might be a silver lining.
-
@Remittancegirl Have you, or has anyone you know, attended in person local Indivisible meetings?
@kelleynnn I'm not in the US. I'm not American.
-
@Remittancegirl this didn't slow down our local nk4 one bit. It's a distributed system.
@djmitche Yay!
-
@Remittancegirl our local No Kings organization does all its organizing via Signal. Outreach on social media, organizing and planning on Signal. I’m sure some local groups get it wrong, though.
@edebill That's very encouraging.
-
@Remittancegirl @acm_redfox perhaps not the tech bros, but the US government could possibly shut down quite a bit of the Fediverse the same way they took on Autistici/Inventati, by revoking domains and designating server operators as terrorists.
@ghouston @acm_redfox possibly, but that would present the gov't with a stark first amendment issue. Wholly owned companies are not legally obligated to host free speech.
-
@Remittancegirl Yeah, but the last events I remember seeing people saying how great the parking was and they were able to get home early and also one of them had a really great DJ. You know, important things when you're trying to overthrow a fucking dictator...
Less DJs and parking, more fucking guillotines.
@retrosponge @Remittancegirl Less parking, yes, but I would say more dancing.
-
dopamine addicted.
That's by design.
They've hacked our neurotransmitters. They've hacked our brains. It's a construct. It's a manipulation. People can unplug.@FranceskaMann All language hacks the neurotransmitters. And yes, of courses it is a construct, but what is not? Society is a construct. And yet some societies are really wonderful, life-affirming constructs.
However, it should be as consensual as possible.

@tomjennings @Remittancegirl ”The year is 2026 AD. The internet is entirely occupied by the billionaires. Well, not entirely...”
-
@tomjennings This technology is here to stay, it isn't going away.
It is what we do with it and what we demand of it and how we shape it (where we can) that matters. But we can and should mitigate the perils as much as we can.
And yes, you are right: the internet is not a safe space. But then where is a safe space?
I agree wholeheartedly that meeting in the flesh is good - not just to lessen dependence on digital communication - but because what is experienced in the body more powerful.

@Quasit @Remittancegirl The DNC is in debt while the RNC is swimming in money. The Democrats impeached Trump twice in his first term, and they're currently in the minority in Congress. There's a wealth tax on the ballot in California. Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic primary for Senate in Michigan. Democrats and the DNC aren't perfect, but don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Tne ultimate tip: if you plan to be free, use free tools. Free as in freedom, not free of charge. That's the point.
