Yes, because the "AI" folks mostly agree with right wing talking points because that's what the whole idea of "AI" is build upon. That's a bad argument for relegitimizing X.
@tante It makes sense to have an account if you report on what people write there, especially when you can no longer view content without an account. I also remember a popular cartoonist who left talking about leaving the account be to prevent squatter scams - where someone else could impersonate you once the handle is available. Where one should definitely draw the line is actively posting.

@lidsel @tante I won't touch Musk's degraded version of Twitter. Access only by the current crop of outlaw Nitter servers defying Musk's takedown. When they go I will treat Twitter as Facebook and consider it taken down too.
Oh and I will keep deadnaming Musk's website so long as he keeps deadnaming his trans daughter.
-
@tante I keep thinking about writing up a blog post titled something like "No, we're not all hanging out at the Nazi Bar", with the basic premise of:
Hey, you keep saying you like hanging out at the Nazi Bar because "everyone" is there, but, no, we're not. You are not hearing anyone who's not cool hanging out with Nazis. Continuing to tell me what fun you're having at the Nazi Bar is not a great look. Nor is telling me how Good For Business being seen at that bar is.
@NfNitLoop @tante There is exactly ONE reason to go to a Nazi bar. That is to go there with your best anti-fascist combat crew, storm the Nazi bar, and beat up the Nazis inside.
This of course has quite literally been done...
-
@tante The only good reason I can see any decent person willingly on Twitter is to monitor the fascists.
@sharpcheddargoblin @tante You need one of the takedown-defying Nitter instances to do this without an account

@tante so they are essentially degrading themself from journalists to ai repeaters.

@tante It shows at a minimum, that whoever is on X to talk about AI ether are Nazis or don’t care that they are Nazis.
You would think that if you wanted to promote AI to the masses who are already pretty pissed at Data Centers and the destruction of our economy by these TechOligarchBros, would not congregate in a Nazi Bar. But then we have Substack too…

@tante Unfortunately it still has network effect for whatever reason, much like instagram, even though its slowly dying and likely propt up by bots.
Journalists, especially freelancers, who live off eyeballs are beholden to finding subscribers and viewers.
I don't like it, but I understand it. I'm blown away how there hasn't been a single platform alternative to bring in the death blow at this point. But social media is now conflated with addiction... without that addiction, most people will just not use it.

@tante Apparently self control and common sense are in short supply.
-
@tante frankly, is xitter2.0 aka "bluesky" so much better, in that aspect?
Idiots follow hype trends. Shitty "influencers" seek numbers. Idiots follow trends created by "influencers". And the lions, erm, "influencers" stay near where the zebra are.
::breaks into song:: IT'S THE CIRCLE OF.... shit.

@tante The journalists were virtue signaling. They were cool with Twitter all along and with the whole fascist vibe. They want a seat at the table with the fascists. We’ll only hear them complain about fascism if they aren’t included. So long as they get that seat they’ll act like everything is cool.

@tante right wing hellhole people / ai people venn diagram:
️@misterdave @tante it'd be more accurate if the diagram was an asshole.

@tante
so weird statements from both sides.some AI folk may be there, but that's because X/thread/etc. is where avg. people use.
while AI itself isn't necessarily be right wing' stuff, but left wing bros mostly killed the good players -
@tante @der_exil_hesse social.netdynamics.eu will be happy to welcome you on the fediverse, with all the advantages of Mastodon and without its limitations.

I left X when I came over here. I just couldn't take any more. At the time, I was still working - and I quit as much to avoid the bad reputation X carried with it.
I can't remember when Twitter was ever cool

Not just that, but the AI people there are the TESCREAL, Silicon Valley types, and journalists still getting their stories from Xitter is why this conception is amplified and presented as given in media discourse.

@glyph @tante the one problem with that metric is fedi tends to have a higher rate of fall off. People join, stay active for about a few months, then stop being active.
There is a sort of worrying consistency to the number of active users, despite people signing up all the time.
There are definitely a few factors to this, but it's something many of the devs connected to various parts are trying to figure out if they can improve. I think mastodon follow groups was one attempt at this.
@theeclecticdyslexic @glyph @tante
Mastodon isn't designed to be addictive, unlike a lot of other social media systems which do their best to create an addictive feed.
I am not surprised that people try out non-addictive things and then stop. That feels healthy. That falloff in use is, in a healthier world, probably what more things would see.

@passenger @theeclecticdyslexic @glyph I wouldn't say that Mastodon "isn't designed to be addictive". It shares a lot of the foundational logic of those kinds of platforms and therefore inherits some issues.
